Free Safety Seminars For Golden Valley Seniors This Fall

Seminars include protecting against identity theft and scams, calling 911 about medical concerns and more.

Seniors who want to be safety savvy can learn about issues that most often endanger them at a free series of seminars held this fall at the Golden Valley Police Department. Attend one or attend all three. Seminars include a light meal.

The Senior Safety seminars will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 17 through Oct. 1, at the Police Department Training Room.

Seminars by topic include:

• Sept. 17: "Safety & Security." Get the latest information about crime prevention basics, home security, personal safety, keeping your home network (Internet) safe and more.

• Sept. 24: "What Happens When I Call 911 With A Medical Emergency?" The GVPD often hears from people that they didn’t want to "bother us" or that they were afraid of what would happen to them if they called 911 with a medical concern. This session shows step-by-step what happens when you call 911 with a medical emergency, from the dispatcher taking the call and the officers responding, to the paramedics and ambulance, to the emergency room doctor. You’ll also learn the basics of storing medication properly and how to prepare for an emergency.

• Oct. 1: "Identity Theft & Financial Exploitation." Seniors are the most frequently targeted group when it comes to financial exploitation. Learn how to spot frauds and scams that target seniors and how to best protect yourself.
