Brookview Golf Course Getting Back to Full Operation in Golden Valley

Rough weather this year has hit the 18-hole golf course hard. Debris clean up is complete and new nets for the driving range are installed.

The city-owned Brookview Golf Course off Hwy 55 in Golden Valley has weathered through some nasty summer weather.

"Weather is always unpredictable and sometimes we just have to take a day or a moment at a time," said Brookview Golf Operations Manager Ben Disch. "The June storms this year came at us, hit us fast and furious. We lost 30 plus trees on the course."

The storms June 20-22 hit the city hard and Brookview Golf Course and Park was not spared.

"The course was flooded in several areas and the driving range nets were ripped to shreds," Disch said. "It looked like a warzone."

Suffice to say, the course was closed that weekend following the June storms, which in the past had been a busy time for the course.

"We bounced back in a hurry though, the guys did a tremendous job with the clean up," he said. "It took a few days for the course to drain from flooding, but by the following Tuesday we were ready to go for all 18 holes."

The only part not ready to go was the driving range, which was closed about two and a half weeks in the middle of summer. The range has since opened and is open now.

"Nets had to be ordered from LFS Netting in the state of Washington," Disch said. "They had to construct them and ship them and we had to take the old ones down and then put the new ones up."

Brookview has been owned by the city of Golden Valley since 1967 and the city took over operations of it in 1969. Disch said he doesn't remember this bad of damage from storms in the summer since about 10 years ago in 2003.

"We got a lot of rain at one time and it takes time to drain out," he said. "We've seen our fair share of bad weather through the years, but dealing with weather in this business you take bumps and bruises."

Disch emphasized that the driving range and 18-hole course is open and in wonderful condition. The only part still slightly modified is the 9-hole par 3 course, which is currently only a 7 hole course. The reason-- the amount of standing water that still needs to drain. The modified par 3 course is available at discounted green fees, he said.

"Business in general has been a year of challenges," Disch said. "We opened up later then before and with that late start we didn't have the best weather in April and early May then the June storms struck."

The recent heat advisory and hot and humid weather has also been a challenge.

"We encourage people out playing to stay hydrated," he said.

Brookview continues to host groups, leagues, lessons for all ages, golf academy, tournaments and events. This year it dropped the senior age from 62 to 60 and received positive feedback on it.

Disch said other than the weather it's been business as usual.
