Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher, a Golden Valley teacher, will not return for a third term following his defeat Saturday at the union's convention. Union members chose Denise Specht over Dooher to lead the 70,000-member organization, Education Minnesota announced. She’ll take over from Dooher July 1. Dooher is on leave as a physical education teacher at Sandburg Middle School in Golden Valley, according to MinnPost. According to Robbinsdale Area Schools spokesperson Tia Classen, Dooher is guarenteed a position in the district should he choose to return, but stated she did not know yet if Dooher was planning to do so.

Education Minnesota nominated 135 teachers in total for the award.
Robbinsdale Cooper High School teacher Kristine Browers was nominated for the 2013 Teacher of the Year award. Browers, a science teacher, was the only teacher from Robbinsdale Area Schools to receive the nomination. A 25-member panel of community leaders will name semifinalists and finalists in coming weeks, with the Teacher of the Year announced at a ceremony May 5 in Brooklyn Park. According to an Education Minnesota press release, this year’s program will name the 49th Minnesota Teacher of the Year, celebrating the tradition of excellence in teaching in Minnesota. Teachers from both public and private schools were nominated. Shakopee Public Schools had 23 teachers nominated for the award, the most out of any district in the state.

Victoria Arabanos was awarded the honor by Education Minnesota, a group that represents teachers and educators throughout the state.
In a statement released Nov. 8, Education Minnesota announced that Victoria Arabanos would be named the Education Support Professional of the Year for 2013. Arabanos works at Plymouth Middle School and supervises in-school suspension. Arabanos has also spent time as volunteer assistant coach for the STEP dance team at Sandburg Middle School. Currently she volunteers with Plymouth Middle School's rugby team. "Mrs. Arabanos is someone that people trust and respect," Krista Range, assistant principal at Plymouth Middle School, said in the release. "She is truly an inspiration to everyone." Anna Wosika teaches first grade.

Last week, Education Minnesota named Wosika as one of its candidates for teacher of the year.
