The accident occurred on Feb. 10 on Interstate 694. The officer is from Golden Valley.
A little after 1 p.m., Minnesota State Patrol Officer Jeffrey Smith was involved in an accident on Interstate 694 in Anoka County. According to the Minnesota State Patrol accident report, Smith, of Golden Valley, was sitting in the left lane on eastbound Interstate 694 when a driver in the center lane lost control of his car. The car, a Ford pickup truck, spun out and “landed on the hood” of Smith’s car, according to the report. Road conditions were icy at the time of the accident and no injuries reported. The accident was one of hundreds on Sunday as winter storm Orko dumped snow and sleet on the Twin Cities. Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Transportation officials say that heavy snow on Sunday will lead to a difficult Monday morning commute.
Winter storm Orko dumped snow and ice on most of Minnesota Sunday, including Golden Valley. The heavy snowfall will make driving on Monday morning potentially hazardous. On their Facebook page Sunday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation urged drivers to be careful: Plan ahead now. Leave early for work or work from home if that is possible. When driving, slow down, drive for the road conditions. Give plows room to work. And, the plows are out!! On Twitter, Hennepin County said that all plows were tackling the snow Sunday. If your car is parked on a public street, it’s time to move it. The City of Golden Valley issued a snow emergency Sunday afternoon as winter storm Orko continued to dump snow throughout portions of Minnesota. Plows will begin clearing streets at midnight on Sunday. No parking is allowed on any street until plowing has been completed. This is the fourth snow emergency that the City has issued this winter. According to the City website, if two or more inches of snow fall, Golden Valley calls an emergency. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning on Saturday, predicting that Golden Valley and Hennepin County could see anywhere between 4 and 8 inches of snow.
