Hopkins Player Chosen for Volleyball Guide Cover

Sam Seliger-Swenson is the top-ranked sophomore, according to Breakdown Sports.

Hopkins High School volleyball player Sam Seliger-Swenson has once again been selected as one of 21 players to appear on the cover of Breakdown Sports USA’s Volleyball Guidebook. The company selected top athletes for the cover of its annual guide, seen by hundreds of people across the county. Seliger-Swenson, who also appeared on last year’s cover, is ranked as the top sophomore, according to Breakdown Sports. This year’s guidebook features profiles of 750 players—including more than 300 players profiled with a photo and short Q&A. It’s now on sale for $69.99. Click here for details on how to order. North Junior High Student Named to Youth National Volleyball Team

Ninth grader Samantha Seliger Swenson will compete in the European Global Challenge Tournament in July.

  (The following news release comes from Hopkins Public Schools.)   Hopkins volleyball player Samantha Seliger Swenson has been named to the Youth National Volleyball Team and will be competing in the European Global Challenge Tournament in July. The Youth National Team will consist of the top 12 youth players in the country. Seliger Swenson has been a starter for the Hopkins team since 7th grade. She was also recently named top sophomore in the state by Breakdown Sports and will be one of 25 players on the cover of their 2012 Volleyball Guidebook. The Youth National team will start their tour in Martignacco, Italy as guests of the Italian Youth National Team. They will play the Italians four times in Martignacco, Gorica, Claut and Trieste…

The Breck Volleyball team defeated Providence Academy 3-0 on Tuesday evening at Breck High School. The Mustangs improve to 5-3 and will travel to play St. Agnes this Thursday night.

Royals girls soccer team blank third-ranked Eagles on Tuesday night.

The Hopkins girls soccer team claimed its biggest victory of the season on Tuesday, shutting out the then-Lake Conference leader on the road to highlight the early week area athletic schedule. Hopkins Girls Soccer Eight saves from goalkeeper Jenny Grahek made Jillaine DeYoung's lone tally stand as the Hopkins girls soccer team stunned third-ranked Eden Prairie on its own field on Tuesday. The victory boosted the Royals' unbeaten streak to three games as the squad improve to 4-3-6 overall and 1-1-4 in conference play. Hopkins Boys Soccer The Hopkins boys soccer team lost 1-0 to Prior Lake on Saturday and 5-1 to Wayzata on Tuesday to fall to 2-6-2 on the season.  Heading into Tuesday, Juan Montero and Christian Abundis were tied for the Royals' scoring lead with one goal apiece. Mustangs struggle against Visitation, but coach sees positives in young team.

Breck again found out Tuesday what it will take to become one of the top teams in the Tri-Metro Conference. The Mustangs struggled with returning serves, digging out returns and getting into an offensive flow in falling 25-7, 25-13, 25-8 to Visitation. It was the fifth loss in six outings for the Mustangs (2-6, 2-3 Tri-Metro Conference), but coach Holiday Samabaly is seeing improvement in her young team. “Our team compared to last year has really improved,” she said. “Coaching this team how to want to win is the hardest thing. We were in the bottom three in the conference last year, so just the confidence from that is challenging."
