Drivers, don’t mess with your phones while you’re headed down the road. Golden Valley and other metro police departments are ramping up texting enforcement starting Thursday. Crystal, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Minneapolis, New Hope, Robbinsdale and University of Minnesota Police Departments are highlighting the issue during the prom and graduation season. Driver distraction accounts for about 20 percent of all crashes annually. In the past three years, distracted teen drivers were involved in crashes that resulted in 25 deaths and 4,505 injuries. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office asks people to make a New Year's resolution in 2013 that could save a life or prevent a crash.

A new survey indicates that while 97 percent of teens know texting while driving is dangerous, 43 percent of them admit to sending a text while driving – and 75 percent say the practice is common among their friends.The survey found that teenagers feel pressure to quickly respond to text messages – and adults are also setting a poor example by texting while driving themselves. A Golden Valley church is doing its part to curb distracted drivers.
The sign in front of the Christian Life Center on Medicine Lake Road is known for grabbing some attention. “A lot of times it’s just a message that makes you feel good,” says Kelly Smith, who drives past the sign on her way to work nearly every day. “But this time, it made us stop listening to the radio and start talking.” It’s a talk Smith hadn’t really had with her 11-year-old daughter, Hannah. “She’s not old enough to drive, but she’s definitely into texting.” The sign reads “Honk if you love Jesus, text while driving if you want to meet him.” “I need to be relevant for a message to really sink in,” says Dave Kent, pastor at the Christian Life Center. “We people to understand that it really does make a difference what you do in your …
