The autumn sports season continued its march this week as the regular-season came to a close for Golden Valley-area soccer teams, as local tennis teams competed in their sectional tournaments. Robbinsdale Armstrong Girls Tennis The seventh-seeded Robbinsdale Armstrong girls tennis team won its first two rounds of Section 6AA Tournament play this week, topping No. 16 Columbia Heights 7-0 on Wednesday and DeLaSalle by the same score on Thursday. Breck Netters Fall To State Champs In Regular Season Finale

Edina tops Mustangs, 6-1, on a sunny Wednesday afternoon.

The Breck girls tennis team came up on the short end of a 6-1 loss against visiting Edina—the 14-time defending state champions—on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. With the defeat, the Mustangs close out the regular season with a 7-8 record as the squad now prepares for the Section 4A playoffs. The sectional individual tournament is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 5, with the 4A team bracket commencing on Friday, Oct. 14.

Sports Roundup: Hopkins Girls Stun Eden Prairie

Royals girls soccer team blank third-ranked Eagles on Tuesday night.

The Hopkins girls soccer team claimed its biggest victory of the season on Tuesday, shutting out the then-Lake Conference leader on the road to highlight the early week area athletic schedule. Hopkins Girls Soccer Eight saves from goalkeeper Jenny Grahek made Jillaine DeYoung's lone tally stand as the Hopkins girls soccer team stunned third-ranked Eden Prairie on its own field on Tuesday. The victory boosted the Royals' unbeaten streak to three games as the squad improve to 4-3-6 overall and 1-1-4 in conference play. Hopkins Boys Soccer The Hopkins boys soccer team lost 1-0 to Prior Lake on Saturday and 5-1 to Wayzata on Tuesday to fall to 2-6-2 on the season.  Heading into Tuesday, Juan Montero and Christian Abundis were tied for the Royals' scoring lead with one goal apiece. Hopkins Girls Soccer The Hopkins girls soccer team claimed its second-straight tie against a top-10 opponent with a 1-1 deadlock against visiting Eden Prairie. The first day of school saw several Golden Valley-area squads in action.

Golden Valley-area athletic teams eased into their post-Labor Day schedules on Tuesday. Only a small sampling of squads returned to competition on the first day of school. Hopkins Girls Soccer A 0-0 tie at No. 3-ranked Edina got the Lake Conference schedule started for the Hopkins girls soccer team on Tuesday. The deadlock gave the Royals a 2-1-1 record. It was the second of three consecutive games for the squad against ranked teams, the final contest of the stretch comes on Thursday, when Hopkins hosts No. 7 Eden Prairie at 5 p.m. Jillaine Young leads the Royals with two goals on the season, with Cody Webster, Corbin Boyd, Paris Ebersviller and Leah Chase also netting goals so far this autumn. Fall Sports Season Begins For Local Squads

Several autumn squads from Robbinsdale, Breck and Hopkins have commenced their campaigns.

The fall sports season has descended upon the area as several autumn squads from local high schools have begun their seasons over the past week. Cooper Boys Soccer The Robbinsdale Cooper boys soccer team dropped its first two games of the year, losing 6-2 to Heritage Christian last Thursday and 9-2 at St. Michael-Albertville on Monday. Bashiru Kormah leads the Hawks with two goals thus far, with Simeon Ogunyemi and Joseph Lewis logging one tally apiece. Cooper travels to the third-ranked team in Class A, Benilde-St. Margaret’s for a 7 p.m. game today. Hopkins' Erickson Advances to State Tennis Tournament

The Royals' top doubles team fell just shy of a state spot.

Hopkins senior Ryan Erickson is headed to the state tennis tournament following a first-place finish Wednesday at the 6AA section tournament, while Michael Fields and Manfred Barrios narrowly missed securing a doubles berth for the Royals. Erickson, the No. 1 seed, went 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a semifinal matchup against Wayzata’s Scott Vezzosi. He then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Wayzata’s Dustin Britton. Fields and Barrios, who entered the tournament with the No. 2 seed, fell to Minneapolis South’s Luke Elifson and Martin Beck 6-3, 6-1.
