Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek offers tips for keeping your home safe over the holidays.
Editor's Note: The following is a Hennepin County Sheriff's Office release. * Don’t openly display your Christmas tree and gifts in the window so it’s easily visible. A burglar could smash the window and grab the packages. * If you are away on a trip, ask a neighbor to help create a "lived in" look for your home. Use a light timer when you are away and ask a neighbor to keep the front of your home clean of papers and debris. A neighbor could even park a car on your driveway. * Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to a trusted neighbor. * Don't announce that you are out-of-town on social media sites. Post your vacation photos on facebook when you return from your out-of-town …

Night to Unite, which is the state-wide effort of National Night Out, serves as a way for neighbors to come together for some outdoor activity, food and fun. It also serves as an opportunity for local law enforcement to remind residents of ways to protect themselves and their homes. Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and his deptuties will be visiting block parties around the metro area Tuesday night. Before you head out to your local park, make sure you run through a few safety checks.
With this week's burst of warm and sunny weather, many people took to Golden Valley's parks. But it also brought some calls to local police - especially from the bike paths like those at Theodore Wirth Park. "Every year in early spring we have people that are involved in accidents with their bicycles or rollerblades and that's because they didn't do safety checks before you get on your bike," says Sgt. Fred McCormick, with the Minneapolis Park Police. "Inevitably we'll get a few calls from the Grand Rounds bike path from people who have fallen or are stranded with a broken bike."
