Summer Trip Teaches Skills For District 281 Students

Robbinsdale Area Schools students learn life skills during the summer.

The old Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” came to life this summer for nine students in the Robbinsdale Area Schools’ Highview Alternative Program, and it was a life lesson the students will never forget.  Dustin Dobitz, science teacher at Highview, along with his colleague, Jim Wangensteen, took the students to the Laketrails Base Camp in Lake of the Woods for a nine-day wilderness trip. It’s an annual trip that students and staff at Highview take, and they begin planning for it in the spring.  Students learn to survive in the wilderness, dealing with sun, wind, rain, campfire cooking, tent camping, canoeing, portaging and more.  “It was great to see nine …

Armstrong Graduate Book Signing in August

The Golden Valley native will have signing for her new book Sunday, Aug. 5, in Minneapolis.

Class of 1987 Armstrong High School graduate Kristy Athens, author of the new book "Get Your Pitchfork On! The Real Dirt on Country Living," will have a book signing 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Magers and Quinn Booksellers in Minneapolis near Calhoun Square. Not only will there be a book signing, but also reading of the book that is getting very positive reviews. Danish Teacher Visits Zachary Lane Elementary

The educator will visit targeted services programs in the Robbinsdale School District.

According to a Robbinsdale School District press release: A local family, with children who graduated from Robbinsdale Cooper High School, is hosting friends from Denmark in July.  One is an elementary teacher in Denmark, who wished to learn more about summer school in America.  Kristine Meldal will be visiting the summer targeted services program in Robbinsdale Area Schools. The teacher will be at Zachary Lane Elementary School at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 17. Zachary Lane Ranks High in State Elementary Schools

The school is 16th in the state on the recent Multiple Measurement Ratings.

Robbinsdale Area Schools' western-most school knows its direction and its place in the state and that is near the top and going forward. Zachary Lane Elementary School in Plymouth received one of the highest ratings in the state on the recent Multiple Measurement Ratings (MMR), ranking 16th in the state in elementary schools.  Schools earn points in each of four categories:  proficiency on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCAs), student growth on the MCAs, achievement gap reduction and, in the case of high schools, graduation rates. Their focus rating (FR) was one of the highest in the state for any school, ranking 17th.  Focus ratings are generated by combining the proficiency and growth of the seven identified subgroups in …

Local High School Seniors Win Peace Award

Two high school seniors from Armstrong and Cooper received the Rose Rees Peace Award.

According to a Robbinsdale School District press release: Seniors Marissa Soliz, from Robbinsdale Armstrong High School, and Katie Bowden, from Robbinsdale Cooper High School, received the Rose Rees Peace Award for their passion for and commitment to international relations and world peace. It is the 77th year for this award. The young women were honored at a reception May 2. Marissa believes that countries who are trying to create a higher standard of living for their citizens, as well as countries that already have a high standard of living, can create or sustain that standard of living with a smaller environmental footprint.  Using renewable resources, along with the science of engineering, can result in the transformation of renewable …

Plymouth Student Going To Performance Academy

A Plymouth Middle School student was selected to attend the Sphinx Summer Performance Academy in Ohio.

Anthony Brown-Norton, an eighth grader at Plymouth Middle School (PMS) in the Robbinsdale Area Schools, has been selected to attend the Sphinx Summer Performance Academy at Oberlin Conservative in Ohio. The academy is a very competitive national program for aspiring African American and Latino string players, and is the only one of its kind in the nation. “Anthony has been a wonderful role model for his peers in everything he’s been involved in at Plymouth Middle School over the last three years,” said Rachel Rogness, orchestra teacher at PMS. “This kind of rigorous program will only strengthen his solid leadership and skills, which he will share with his fellow musicians next year at Armstrong High School.” (The preceding information was …

District 281 Seeks Educational Assistant Nominations

Know a Robbinsdale School District Education Assistant? Time to recognize them!

According to a Robbinsdale School District 281 press release: Robbinsdale Area Schools is taking nominations for the 2013 Robbinsdale Education Assistant of the Year.  This is the time to nominate someone who has made a difference in your life or the life of your child, and anyone can nominate – teachers, students, parents and community members.  Self-nominations are also accepted. Last year was the first year Robbinsdale Area Schools participated in the Education Assistant of the Year, which leads to the state and national Education Assistant of the Year. Robins Adapted PI Floor Hockey Team Win State

This is the third state championship title for the Robins Adapted PI Floor Hockey team.

The Robins Adapted PI Floor Hockey team capped an unbeaten regular season by taking home a third state championship in four years, earning a 7-2 victory over the Dakota United Hawks in a game which was much closer than the scoreboard at Bloomington Jefferson High School indicated. Mike Madson had two goals and two assists; Andy Madson had one goal and two assists, Jeremy Jost had three assists, and Joe Dubisar had three goals.  Charlie Wittmer made 36 saves ; Tiffany Graff blocked twelve shots and Bailey Miller blocked seven.  Charlie Wittmer, Joe Dubisar and Mike Madson were each named to the Wells Fargo All-Tournament Team, but everyone on the team worked together and made important contributions to team victories all season.  (The …

Robbinsdale School Board earns excellence in communications award.

The Robbinsdale Area School Board has been selected to receive the 2012 Minnesota School Public Relations Association (MinnSPRA) Excellence in School Board Communications Award.  The MinnSPRA Awards program provides an opportunity for high-quality communications to be shared and celebrated. The Excellence in School Board Communications Award recognizes an elected school board or individual board member for outstanding leadership and commitment to school public relations and communications. Two Robbinsdale Area Schools Are Recognized

Armstrong High School and Meadow Lake Elementary were recognized for reading research.

Two Robbinsdale Area Schools will be among 130 schools statewide that are recognized by the Minnesota Center for Reading Research at the University of Minnesota on February 29, 2012. Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth and Meadow Lake Elementary School in New Hope are being honored for their success in meeting Academic Yearly Progress  (AYP) in reading. Staff from both buildings, including principals David Dahl and Kim Hiel, will be on hand to celebrate the hard work of students, teachers and administrators. The U of M Center for Reading Research is honoring these schools that, after missing AYP in reading, have successfully made AYP in reading for the past two years.
