The Hopkins basketball star will help the team try to win its fifth-straight gold medal.
Hopkins High School basketball star Nia Coffey has been named to the USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Championship Team, USA Basketball announced Sunday. The USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee selected Coffey for the 12-member team following four days of trials May 16 through 19 involving 33 athletes age 19-years-old and younger. University of Miami head coach Katie Meier will head the team. The team will try to win its fifth-straight gold medal July 18 through 28 at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship in Klaipeda and Panevėžys, Lithuania. Coffey has had a standout year. Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey received the Purple Team’s MVP award at Saturday’s Women's Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game, the association announced. The game, played in New Orleans on the same court as the NCAA women’s Final Four, featured the top 20 high school seniors in the country. Coffey scored 12 points, hitting five of nine shots from the field. She also snagged one steal and three rebounds. Despite her efforts, the Purple Team lost to the Black Team 70-74. Coffey entered the game coming off a standout season. Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey put up two points and snagged six rebounds in Wednesday’s McDonald’s All-American Game, the Chicago Tribune reported. Coffey played on the East team, which lost 92-64. The McDonald’s All-American game is a prestigious tournament for rising stars. Coffey was among more than 800 high school seniors from 39 states and the District of Columbia who were nominated for the 2013 McDonald’s All American Boys and Girls Games. Just 24 girls and 24 boys were selected for the final roster. Coffey and Braham High School’s Rebekah Dahlman were just the ninth and 10th Minnesotans to be named McDonald's All-Americans. Fresh off a state championship win, Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey has been named as the school’s Athena award winner, while football standout JT DenHartog was chosen as the Apollo award winner. The awards recognize the most outstanding female and male athletes in the senior class. Coffey was named the player of this year’s state championship game. She was also picked for the McDonald’s All American Team, chosen as Breakdown Sports USA’s No. 2 player in the state and honored with All State recognition. Coffey, who has earned four varsity letters in basketball, plans to play for Northwestern next year. DenHartog has earned three varsity letters in football and two for baseball. Nia Coffey, Erin O’Toole and Mikaala Shackelford all committed to play with Division I schools.
Three of Hopkins High School’s top girls basketball players signed to play at the collegiate level on Wednesday. Guard Nia Coffey signed with Northwestern University. Forward Erin O’Toole signed with the University of North Dakota. And Guard Mikaala Shackelford signed with the University of Illinois.
