Wednesday, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association announced support for state legislation that would improve public safety by strengthening gun background checks and increasing punishments for repeat offenders. Sheriff Stanek and Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director Jim Franklin joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the State Capitol in St. Paul to support the legislation authored by State Representative Debra Hilstrom of Brooklyn Center. Congressman is co-sponsor to bill pushing assault weapons ban, other measures.
Decrying the Newtown, CT massacre and the large number of mass shootings in America in recent years, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) called on his congressional colleagues to pass a package of gun control laws he had co-sponsored. “As parents, we cannot imagine the deep pain that such a tragedy leaves in its wake," read a statement jointly released by the offices of Ellison and Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) on Monday. “Such tragedies cannot be ignored or accepted as the new norm." Grijalva and Ellison co-chair the House of Representatives' Progressive Caucus. Ellison and Grijalva urged their colleagues to pass a package of gun control legislation that includes a ban on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons, like those used by Newtown shooter …
