Closures will continue until the project is completed in mid July.
Drivers will face MnPASS lane closures on Interstate 394 starting next week. Lanes will be closed between Interstate 94 and Highway 100 beginning May 6 in order for crews to replace protective gate arms, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announced. The agency will close access to the reversible section from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays. Evening, overnight and weekend closures may also be needed. If those closures do wind up being necessary, MnDOT will provide additional information. The section will be open during major downtown Minneapolis events and during the following times: Crews will complete the project in mid July.

The city will feel the effects of some of the 280 projects statewide.
Hopkins residents will feel the effects of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s $1.1 billion 2013 road construction season. On Wednesday, MnDOT announced road closings and detours from 280 construction projects—87 projects in the metro and 193 projects in greater Minnesota. A 2013 resurfacing project on I-94 from Clearwater to St. Cloud could bring potential backup of up to 20 miles or more during peak travel times, according to MnDOT.
As the Minnesota winter gives way to spring, road construction projects around the Twin Cities and Minnesota are gearing up for another season. Among the projects is a resurfacing 7.5 miles of Interstate 94 north of the Twin Cities from Clearwater to St. Cloud. The Minnesota Department of Transportation estimates the project could impact a backup of traffic of “20 miles or more during peak travel periods.” With residents in the northwest metro getting ready to make travel plans for spring and summer, MnDOT is urging drivers to consider an alternate route during the Clearwater to St. Cloud I-94 reconstruction project. “Find the best route that works for you based on where you’re leaving from and when and your destination,” said J.P. …

The snow is gone, but commuters still dealt with slippery roadways Wednesday morning.
At about 8:50 a.m., Minnesota Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed an incident on Interstate 394 and Wirth Parkway that caused law enforcement to shut down one lane. According to the Star Tribune, "ramps and bridges are slippery in places." On Twitter, Lt. Eric Roeske from the Minnesota State Patrol said that from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, troopers handled 215 crashes and 316 spinouts throughout the state. The roadway's southbound lanes will close to traffic at 5 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, and are set to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 27.

More than five miles of the busy roadway are set to close to traffic at 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, while workers inspect overpasses and make repairs to bridges, signs and drainage systems. The southbound lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 27. During the closure, motorists will be directed to detour along westbound I-394, southbound Hwy. 169 and eastbound Hwy. 62. MnDot says MN-100 will shut down overnight in both directions.
If you plan to be out late on Friday night, keep in mind that MN-100 will be closed in both directions after midnight. MnDOT says the section of 100 between Highway 55 and 42nd Avenue will be closed from about 1:00 a.m. until around 5:00 a.m. so Xcel Energy crews can put in new transmission lines. One way to get around the area is to use 42nd Avenue or Highway 55 to Highway 169.

With summer construction season in full swing, MNDOT wants local drivers to know the best way to merge lanes. So today, they are starting a campaign to promote the 'zipper merge.' When a lane is closed in a construction zone, a zipper merge occurs when motorists use both lanes of traffic until reaching the defined merge area, and then alternate in zipper fashion into the open lane. When most drivers see the first 'lane closed ahead' sign in a work zone, MNDOT says, they slow too quickly and move to the lane that will continue through the construction area. MnDOT is notorious for providing inaccurate, outdated information. Their project websites seem to rarely be updated and the road signage warning of lane closures is often inaccurate--seemingly forgotten to have been picked up after the work was done.
