A pair of legislators on Thursday introduced a $332 million proposal with a new transit tax, adding to the growing number of proposals to fund transit. Minneapolis Sen. Bobby Joe Champion (DFL District 59) and Brooklyn Park Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL-District 36B) are proposing to spend an additional $300 million per year in the metro and $32 million in Greater Minnesota on transit and connections for people walking, bicycling or using wheelchairs. Hennepin County and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board are hosting two upcoming meetings about the proposed D1 alignment of the Bottineau Transitway near Theodore Wirth Regional Park.
Two Bottineau Transitway community meetings, part of the Theordore Wirth Regional Park Forum, are scheduled to take place at the end of February and early March “Both meetings are part of the Theodore Wirth Regional Park Forum, a multi-day collaborative visioning process that will help the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Hennepin County, and the community best understand the issues and opportunities surrounding introduction of the proposed Bottineau Transitway to the landscape adjacent to the park,” according to the Golden Valley website. Last legislative session, the big question about Southwest Light Rail Transit was whether there was enough political will to fund the project. The tables appear to have turned this year, though. With at least three funding proposals floating around, the focus has lately been more on how to fund it than whether it deserves any money. Edina Sen. These are some of the D-1 alignment benefits outlined in a recently finished document that reviews Bottineau Transitway route alternatives. According to Golden Valley City Council documents, the Metropolitan Council received the Bottineau Transitway Alternatives Analysis on Jan. 9. The 27 page document was compiled by the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority. The Met Council is expected to review and adopt the analysis—which explains why the light rail path through Golden Valley is preferred—in February. In a decision that Golden Valley City Councilmember Joanie Clausen characterized as one of the most difficult in her life, Clausen, Mayor Shep Harris, and Councilmember Mike Freiberg voted 'yes' on a resolution of support for the Bottineau Transitway locally preferred alternative at a Dec. 18 council meeting. I think Council Member Clausen sold her vote out too cheap. Switching her vote on the Bottineau LRT is worth more than 911 Dispatch Service given the disclosure made in an article in the December 26th Star Tribune (http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/184775001.html). During their meeting tonight, Dec. 18, the Golden Valley City Council will vote on a resolution that would allow more studies to be done on the Bottineau Transitway’s locally preferred alternative--a light rail path that would bring the train through Golden Valley. If the council adopts the resolution of support, the Metropolitan Council will vote to incorporate the Golden Valley alignment into the 2030 Twin Cities Regional Transportation Policy Plan.
