Swifts And Fresh Salads in Theo Wirth Park

After eating, families can watch a movie Wednesday at JD Rivers' Children's Garden.

The JD Rivers' Children's Garden in Theodore Wirth Park is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its swift chimney on Wednesday. A swift is a "fast-flying bird that is readily identified by its characteristic 'flying cigar' profile," according to Audubon Minnesota. Their populations have declined by more than 50 percent in the last 40 years. The Minnesota Park & Recreation Board, Audubon Minnesota and the Bryn Mawr neighborhood created a tower for the swifts and a pair moved in this spring, according to the MPRB. From 6 p.m. until dusk Wednesday, families and gardeners will gather fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables in the Children's Garden and then make fresh salads. Pick and Preserve in JD Rivers' Children's Garden

Children and parents have a chance to harvest and can fresh produce on Wednesday in Theodore Wirth Park.

Throughout August, families will have several chances to get outdoors and enjoy fresh-picked produce in JD Rivers' Children's Garden. The first opportunity is Wednesday, at the Intergenerational Can'n and Jam'n. The garden is north of Glenwood Avenue in the eastern part of the park. To the east is a restored prairie. Look for the big Adirondack chair. What: New this year, parents and grandparents can join their children and grandchildren in harvesting from the garden and cooking what they pick.
