Lace up your skates. Ice rinks are open today.
In a statement by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, officials say that the recent stretch of cold temperatures has allowed crews to open some rinks beginning Dec. 26 in time for league play, and all rinks by Jan. 1, weather permitting. According to the statement, the only rink open as of Dec. 24 is the hockey rink at McRae Park. The daily status of each of the MPRB’s 47 rinks at 22 parks can be viewed online throughout the season at www.minneapolisparks.org/rinks. While winter officially begins Dec. 21, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board reminds winter enthusiasts that Mother Nature determines when its outdoor ice rinks can open.

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) crews need 10 consecutive days, 24 hours daily, of temperatures of 20 degrees or lower to create ice and open rinks. Since late November, MPRB crews have been preparing to open 46 ice rinks for skating, broomball, hockey and pond hockey at 22 parks citywide. Typically, MPRB rinks are open in time for the holidays, however, rink preparations have suffered continual setbacks due to snow, rain and temperatures above freezing. If weather permits, the MPRB hopes to have at least some of its rinks open by the end of the month. The status of each rink can be viewed online at www.minneapolisparks.org/rinks. Golden Valley area ice rinks are now officially open for the season.
Cold temperatures are a welcome part of the season for many locals who have been anxious to whip out their ice skates, especially for Golden Valley resident Brian Waldatne. "We've been coming down to the ice just to check it out every night this week," Waldatne said. We caught up with Waldatne who was skating with his son early Saturday morning at Lions Park, one of several ice skating rinks seeing lots of happy faces. From pick-up games to leisurely skating, people of all ages were out having a good time. To hear more on Waldatne's take on this year's ice, check out our quick Patch.com interview with him. Area ice rinks are expected to remain open until Feb. 21, 2011.
