Plans for Controversial Golden Valley Human Rights Commission Advance
After the Human Rights Commission was dismissed two years ago, the Golden Valley City Council considers reestablishing the commission.
Two years after the Golden Valley City Council dismissed the entire Golden Valley Human Rights Commission, the Council is looking at reestablishing the Commission. The December 2011 dismissal of the Human Rights Commission came after commission members presented a resolution to the City Council following a September 2011 shooting. "I don't think any of them recognized the seriousness of their discussion or the legal liability they put us in," Linda Loomis, who was then Mayor, said at the December 2011 meeting at City Hall. MINI Cooper Car Dealership Plans Continue to Move Forward in Golden Valley
The Golden Valley City Council held a public hearing and approved preliminary design plans for the new dealership Feb. 5.
The relocation of the only Mini Cooper Dealership in Minnesota to Golden Valley continues to move forward. The Golden Valley City Council unanimously approved preliminary design plans for the construction of a new 29,500 square foot MINI Cooper dealership building on site of the former Oldsmobile building. If the business receives final approval, the MINI Cooper dealership currently in Bloomington would be relocated to Golden Valley, one of nine in the United States. A representative of the Penski Automotive Group told the council they estimated the building and relocated business could bring about 50 new jobs to the area, see about 1,000 vehicles a year resulting in $30 million in revenue. Golden Valley Fire Fighter Retires After 20 Years of Service
David Gustafson was recognized at a recent Golden Valley City Council meeting.
In January of 1992, David Gustafson joined the Golden Valley Fire Department as a paid, on-call fire fighter. More than 20 years later, on Jan. 6, Gustafson retired from his role with the department, but moved onto a full-time job with the city as a Fire and Property Maintenance Inspector. Gustafson was recognized for his efforts by Fire Cheif Mark Kuhnly at a recent Golden Valley City Council meeting. Kuhnly said that Gustafson made training a priority throughout his tenure with the department, and even sought out training avenues that would better his skills. In an article published last week about the Bottineau Transitway and the locally preferred alternative, Golden Valley Patch readers weren’t shy in expressing their opinions. Many readers were frustrated with information published in the Bottineau Transitway Alternatives Analysis. The 27 page document was compiled by the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority and explains why the light rail path through Golden Valley is preferred. “D-1 would result in significantly less property and neighborhood impacts, improved travel time and greater cost effectiveness, and less disruption of roadway traffic operations,” the Policy Advisory Committee says in the analysis. The Golden Valley City Council is seeking citizens interested in becoming more active in their city government by volunteering to serve on the City’s Advisory Boards and Commissions. Seats are currently open on the Civil Service Commission and the Human Services Fund. Deadline for applications is Jan 24, 2013. Advisory Boards and Commissions recommend policy to the City Council and advise the Council on a variety of diverse issues. You must be a resident of Golden Valley to apply. New Bottineau Document Shows Why Light Rail Through Golden Valley is Preferred
The alternatives analysis shows that some North Minneapolis residents have concerns about the possibility of a light rail coming down Penn Avenue.
Faster travel time. More cost effective. Fewer traffic impacts. These are some of the D-1 alignment benefits outlined in a recently finished document that reviews Bottineau Transitway route alternatives. According to Golden Valley City Council documents, the Metropolitan Council received the Bottineau Transitway Alternatives Analysis on Jan. 9. The 27 page document was compiled by the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority. The Met Council is expected to review and adopt the analysis—which explains why the light rail path through Golden Valley is preferred—in February. Council to Discuss Formation of New, Free Business Group
The Golden Valley Business Council would help support and connect local business professionals and interested residents
At a Jan. 8 council/manager meeting, Golden Valley City Councilmembers will discuss the idea of forming a new community group called the Golden Valley Business Council. Gary Aiken, 2012 Golden Valley Rotary president and founder of Tonka Financial Services, submitted the idea to the city council According to council documents, the Golden Valley Rotary Club is proposing to host monthly meetings for local business professionals, interested residents and community groups in partnership with the City. New Golden Valley City Councilmember Sworn In
A former Planning Commissioner officially began his term as a new city councilmember on Jan. 2.
At a Jan. 2 Golden Valley City Council meeting, new Councilmember Steve Schmidgall was officially sworn into office. Councilmembers appointed Schmidgall when former Councilmember Mike Freiberg resigned to serve as State Representative for District 45B. According to a statement on the City of Golden Valley's website, Schmidgall was first appointed to the City’s Planning Commission in 2005.
