From geocaching to slacklining, scouts can experience and learn new skills during the scouting programs April 7-13, 2013 in Three Rivers Parks.

The following information was provided by Three Rivers Parks. Reservations are required. Call 763-559-6700 to make reservations for your pack, den, or troop  Junior Girl Scouts: Geocacher Sunday, April 7, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., at Baker Near-Wilderness Settlement, Medina. Learn how to use a GPS, and then head to the woods to find hidden geocaches. Cost is $5 and this program is for ages 8-13. Reference activity number #230304-08. Webelos: Naturalist Badge Tuesday, April 9, from 6-8 p.m., at Baker Near-Wilderness Settlement, Medina. Do birds have hollow bones? Are turtles amphibians? When Can You Start Buying Girl Scout Cookies?

Find out the date you can start eating Tagalongs, Thin Mints and Samoas—and how you can locate Golden Valley sales.

Now that it's January and the holidays are in the rearview mirror, your thoughts might be turning to Girl Scout Cookies. Ahhh ... Thin Mints. And Do-si-dos. And Tagalongs. If you have a Girl Scout in the family, or your freezer already is stocked, you're probably set this year. If not, you can score some yummy treats soon. Golden Valley Girl Scouts will sell cookies starting Feb. 2. Sales will continue in February and March. You must buy your cookies directly from a Girl Scout, and they don't sell them online, according to the organization's website. A full list of this year's cookies is on the local council's website. Local Girl Scouts Clean Up On Day of Service

Girl Scouts from Meadowbrook Elementary School, Glen Lake Elementary School and Xin Xing Academy worked to rake leaves and mark sewers during the River Valleys' Centennial Day of Service.

After Oct. 13, Golden Valley's streets were a little cleaner thanks to volunteer work around the community. Not only was last Saturday Midy Tidy Clean-Up day, but it was also the Centennial Service Day for the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys. According to the Girl Scouts' website, River Valleys Girl Scouts engaged in an environmental project of enormous scale. In total, scouts prevented 20,000 pounds of phosphorus from entering bodies of water by raking and bagging leaves and grass. About 45 Girl Scouts raked roughly 30 bags of leaves in Golden Valley's Brookview Park in order to keep organic matter from entering Minnesota's lakes and streams. Parents Talk: Should Kids Be Doing Door-to-Door Fundraising?

We teach our children about “stranger danger” but some organizations and schools encourage kids to sell products door-to-door to raise money.

Each year at this time, we get the knock at the door. It’s the Girl Scouts, selling their cookies. Don’t get me wrong, I can chow down a Thin Mint like nobody's business. But, the selling process leaves something to be desired. In fact, I tend to turn away most youth fundraising requests that appear at my doorstep for two reasons: I don’t think I’m alone in my safety concerns. In fact, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children says that while door-to-door solicitation may be a confidence builder for children, it causes “potential risks for child safety, even within the confines of your own neighborhood.” The safest thing is to prohibit your children from participating in door-to-door solicitations, the organization says on its …

Troops from across the west metro skated at the Roller Garden on Thursday night.

On Thursday, Girl Scouts from around the west Twin Cities—including Golden Valley—celebrated the 151st birthday of Juliette Gordon Low, who founded the organization. The troops skated at Roller Garden in St. Louis Park.
