New Year's Resolution: Get Fit

Dropping a few pounds is one of the most common New Year's resolutions, now Golden Valley Patch wants to help you achieve that goal with some tips from an area expert.

Patch.com spoke to Bill Bolkcom from the Ridgedale YMCA to learn a few tips on how to get fit in 2011.  According to Bolkcom, eating healthy is key to getting in shape, "What we put in our body…helps us reduce disease, helps our mood and our energy levels." Many people are not able to use the full range of motion of their joints—or extend their joints fully. Bolkcom said one's range of motion depends on how tight or how loose a person's muscles are, as well as the strength they have available to their muscles. To improve one's range of motion, Bolkcom suggests a combination of stretching exercises and weights. He recommends that a person who is sedentary should start slowly with range of motion exercises about once a week. For someone who …

No need for the winter blues, just head outside.

I love being on the go and exploring new places and things. But when I'm not packing up my bags and heading out of town, I make the most of my time right here in the Twin Cities. In the winter, it's so easy to stay locked up inside, but it's actually the perfect time to head outdoors and explore our beautiful winter wonderland. I am the girl bundled up in layers, trudging through the heavy snow at sunrise. Even with snow pellets stinging my face and the brisk wind skimming my skin, I am smiling. And it's not a forced smile! I try not to let anything stop me from enjoying my dose of fresh air and free fun! I admit, I take group fitness classes at the gym every week, but hands down, my best workouts are outside, even during wintertime. From …
