Sheriff: Make a Pledge to Not Text and Drive

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office asks people to make a New Year's resolution in 2013 that could save a life or prevent a crash.

Editor's Note: The following was taken from a Hennepin County Sheriff's Office e-newsletter. A new survey indicates that while 97 percent of teens know texting while driving is dangerous, 43 percent of them admit to sending a text while driving – and 75 percent say the practice is common among their friends. The survey found that teenagers feel pressure to quickly respond to text messages – and adults are also setting a poor example by texting while driving themselves.   Make a New Year's resolution in 2013 that could save your life or prevent a crash. Take a pledge NOT to text and drive and ask your family members to do the same. Remember, it is illegal to text and drive in Minnesota.   Create a new habit:  Put your phone in the glove box …

I think the sheriff should lead by example, and do what Ft Wayne did, by not allowing use of in car computers if the car is travelling more than 15 MPH. http://www.theatlanticcities.com/technology/2012/08/policing-police-those-distracting-car-computers/3127/   more ›

Researchers Corner Police on Distracted Driving

Golden Valley says the study doesn't accurately portray its department.

Teenagers are infamous for it. Most responsible adults wouldn't want to admit that they do it. But now, should we add the state's police officers to the list of distracted drivers? Student researchers from St. Mary's University of Minnesota think so. After studying the 378 crashes involving Minnesota police from 2006-10, they're pointing to the amount of technology inside squad cars in a number of police-involved auto crashes. Not only did 14 percent of those accidents involve distracted officers, but the tiny number of those—6 percent—distracted by their cars' computers caused a whopping 21.8 percent of the damage, as measured by the dollar amounts of insurance claims. Put another way, an average crash involving a laptop-using officer …

Driver Smokes, Starts Fire, Answers Phone, Gets Warning

Police say it's a good example of why more people need to call 911.

Last week, my husband and I were heading west on Minnesota Highway 62, about to head north on Highway 100 when a tan Chevy Suburban crossed two lanes of traffic without using a turn signal to get in front of us and make the exit. We followed the truck and watched as it swerved onto the shoulder and back and forth between lanes.   I grabbed my phone and called 911. I told the dispatcher this wasn't an emergency but that it might become one. She had me stay on the phone until a State Patrol trooper could meet up with us and stop the Suburban. The trooper moved in front of us and turned on his lights. We found our exit, shook our heads and were soon talking about something else. About a half-hour later, the trooper called to thank me. He …

You Want to Find God? Just Text and Drive.

A Golden Valley church is doing its part to curb distracted drivers.

The sign in front of the Christian Life Center on Medicine Lake Road is known for grabbing some attention. “A lot of times it’s just a message that makes you feel good,” says Kelly Smith, who drives past the sign on her way to work nearly every day.  “But this time, it made us stop listening to the radio and start talking.” It’s a talk Smith hadn’t really had with her 11-year-old daughter, Hannah. “She’s not old enough to drive, but she’s definitely into texting.” The sign reads “Honk if you love Jesus, text while driving if you want to meet him.” “I need to be relevant for a message to really sink in,” says Dave Kent, pastor at the Christian Life Center.  “We people to understand that it really does make a difference what you do in your …
