Protect Pets with Simple Steps
With more small wild animals encroaching city limits, it's important to keep pets on a short leash—literally and figuratively.
With the recent report in late October of a coyote attack on a Golden Valley dog, readers may be concerned about the safety and health of their pets. Statistically, your cat or dog has a higher chance of being hit by a car or receiving injuries from another domestic animal than he or she does of being attacked or killed by a coyote or raccoon. However, not only are humans now moving into areas that were once the domain of wild animals, but many species such as coyotes, raccoons and red foxes are becoming more adapted to urban lifestyles. In my experience, most injuries to pets from wild animals are preventable and often the result of pet aggression towards the wild animal—not the other way around.
