Business Profile: Knutson Construction Turns 100 Years Old

The Golden Valley-based company is working its way through an economic downturn.

The Twin Cities skyline is an impressive sight thanks, in part, to the work of Golden Valley-based Knutson Construction Company. From buildings such as the Hennepin County Government Center and the Federal Reserve Building in Minneapolis, to 3M and the Minnesota Children’s Museum in St. Paul, Knutson Construction has built, renovated and expanded a wide variety of buildings and structures across the metro area and beyond. The recent downturn in the economy significantly impacted the construction industry. “In Minneapolis, construction unemployment has run as high as 25%,” said Darin Knapp, senior vice president. “Changes in the lending industry have dramatically impacted new construction. But we’re seeing signs of growth. More projects are…

Residents Weigh In On Douglas Drive Redesign

City hosted open house to get feedback from those affected by the reconstruction, which is about three years away.

A construction project to redesign Douglas Drive is about three years off, but residents affected by the project came out Wednesday to review the plans, ask questions and voice concerns. Jeannine Clancy, Golden Valley’s public works director, said the city has acquired one home for right-of-way purposes and plans to acquire five more for the project. Teresa Filipczyk was notified a week ago that hers is one of those homes. Filipczyk said she was planning to put her house up for sale at the end of the year, but the city’s project will delay her plans. She said she hopes to get fair market value for the home because of the many improvements she's put in. But while Filipczyk has concerns about the acquisition process, she said she is positive…

Why are round abouts even necessary at these 2 intersections? There are left turn arrows; that is sufficient. Sidewalks with boulevards, trails and bike lanes? FOR WHO??? Who will use these? Again, low income apartments at Medicine Lake Road and Douglas, other than that- no pedestrians from 55 on thru. Who are you "beautifying" this road for? It's commercial! And since Sandburg closed, there is …   more ›
