Ellison Pushes for More Public Scrutiny of Drone Strikes

The 5th District congressman is also calling for the firing of acting Federal Housing Finance Agency director Ed DeMarco.

Rep. Keith Ellison is urging voters to step up pressure on legislators over the use of drones. The 5th District congressman hosted a forum with about 120 people Wednesday in North Minneapolis to discuss the ethical implications of drone strikes and surveillance, according to Minnesota Public Radio. MPR quoted Ellison as saying: If we weren't talking about technology, we're just soldiers on the ground walking around with M16s. People who get hit by drones -- just a flash and boom, and it's all over.   Ellison Calls for Federal Housing Finance Agency Director’s Firing During a rally to support Golden Valley homeowner Rose McGee’s fight against foreclosure, Ellison called for the firing of acting Federal Housing Finance Agency director Ed …

Golden Valley Voters Favored Keith Ellison in All Precincts

Republican Chris Fields did better in areas Patch covers than in the Fifth District overall.

Patch cities gave U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) one shy of 76,000 votes in the Nov. 6, 2012 election that returned him to Congress for a fourth term. His Republican challenger, Chris Fields, got fewer than half that number of votes from areas Patch covers: 33,623. In Golden Valley, Ellison received 65 percent of the votes. Fields received 34 percent. Ellison was most favored in Golden Valley Precinct 3-C where he garnered 70 percent of the vote. Only two precincts out of 76 in Patch cities favored Fields over Ellison. Both precincts were in Edina—a new part of the Fifth District, added when redistricting redrew political boundaries based on the 2010 U.S. Census. Edina gave Fields the most support of the six Patch cities in the Fifth …

Ellison on Election: 'We Won an Argument'

Fifth District voters sent Keith Ellison back to Congress. His Republican challenger, Chris Fields, received 25 percent of the vote.

Use the scroll bar to the right of the photo above to review tweets and photos from the last week via Storify. It was a big week for U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), who reflected on his Nov. 6, 2012 re-election in a post-election YouTube I've never been able to stand for office and get 256,000 votes before. That's a high-water mark for me. Seventy-five percent of the vote: another high-water mark for me. ... But we did something even more important than winning an election. We won an argument. Chris Fields, Ellison's Republican challenger, put it this way in a statement Wednesday: This loss is tough for all of us. I came up woefully short in my campaign to unseat Keith Ellison. ... It is worth noting that last night we received a record …

Chris Fields: Now is a Time to Reflect, Not Retreat From Core Values

After being defeated by incumbent Congressman Keith Ellison, Fields reflects on the outcome of Election Day and encourages people to keep up their fight for a better America.

Editor's note: The following is a release from Chris Fields for Congress. Dear Friends,   Last night was a very tough night for Republican candidates across the great state of Minnesota. In one night the State House and Senate went from red to blue. Seats that were traditionally “safe” lost in a landslide.    This loss is tough for all of us. I came up woefully short in my campaign to unseat Keith Ellison.    However, the campaign for freedom never dies.  It is because of the tremendous support, and generosity that each of you has given me we will live to fight another day. Our fight is not against Keith Ellison or the Democratic Party, it is a fight for America's future.    This is a time to reflect but not retreat from our core values…

Minnesota Daily: 'Re-Elect Ellison For Congress'

Election Day is less than 24 hours away.

Letter to the Editor: Keith Ellison 'Gets It'

A local shows his support for Rep. Keith Ellison's re-election bid.

Dear Editor, The best campaign slogan this election year comes from Congressman Keith Ellison: EVERYBODY COUNTS, EVERYBODY MATTERS. That says it all, doesn’t it? It shows respect for his constituency—even for those people who didn’t vote for him. It also shows an awareness of his own voting on Capitol Hill. He understands how his legislative action can impact the lives of ALL Americans—not just Minnesotans, but everybody in this country. Keith Ellison is one of those rare politicians who actually believes in the American Dream. Regardless of color, creed, ethnicity, or ideology, he knows we’re all dreamers in this idealistic country together. He knows that his America is also my America, your America, our America. He really “gets it.” More…

Sorry, Ellison supporters but you are choosing to bend reality in order to fit your ideology. The American Civil War lasted four years, in the end Slaves were free in America. In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and in 1964 this country passed the Civil Rights Act with D's and R's. In 1961 President Kennedy made his Man to the Moon speech and in 1969 America made it happen. Keith …   more ›

Strib Makes Endorsement in Fields, Ellison Race

The Twin Cities publication had kind words for both candidates, but ultimately said Ellison was a better fit for the job.

The Star Tribune believes Keith Ellison (DFL) would best serve Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, according to an editorial penned Sunday. While the publication ultimately endorsed Ellison over Chris Fields (R), the editorial does praise the Republican newcomer as "impressive." "[Fields] needs to invest more time in the community before he's ready for Congress," the editorial reads. The endorsement does mention the volatile KFAI debate between the two candidates, admitting Ellison "failed to meet his own standards of decorum" in calling Fields a "lowlife scumbag." That said, the Strib argues the meltdown was out of character for Ellison—who apologized for the outburst—and that voters should "give Ellison a pass this time and send him …

Updated: Chris Fields Says Rep. Keith Ellison Ducked Tuesday’s Debate

In a press conference Tuesday, the 5th District GOP challenger said Ellison called off a debate due to 'scheduling conflicts.'

Despite last week’s fiery debate, U.S. House 5th District challenger Chris Fields said he wants to verbally spar with Rep. Keith Ellison one more time. Yet he believes Ellison isn’t willing to debate him again, after the Minneapolis Urban League canceled a debate scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23. Fields held a press conference Tuesday at the State Capitol to ask Ellison to reschedule the debate. Earlier this week, the Chris Fields for Congress campaign office received an email from Minneapolis Urban League Board Chairman Al McFarlane saying that the debate was canceled due to a scheduling conflict. Fields' campaign office responded to the email, and offered to find and pay for another venue, but nothing has been scheduled. Though the email …

Fields Tries to Leverage Debate Outburst into Fundraising

The Republican challenger for Minnesota’s 5th District is asking supporters for money to counter Ellison’s comments.

GOP challenger Chris Fields has been quick to try to capitalize on a debate with 5th District Rep. Keith Ellison that devolved to name-calling and personal attacks. In a fundraising e-mail the day after Thursday’s debate, Fields reminded supporters that Ellison called him a “low-life scumbag” and a “gutter dweller.” “Throughout this campaign, Ellison has also referred to me as a ‘liar’ and ‘stupid’, and even went as far as to refer to the entire GOP base as a ‘bigoted party,’” he wrote. “Friends, I urgently need your help to fight back against these abhorrent attacks. Will you help us take new TV and radio ads live immediately by making an emergency contribution of $25, $50, $100 or more right away?” The dispute began when Ellison disputed…
