Mustangs beat South St. Paul on Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.
The Breck girls hockey team beat South St. Paul 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday to take the state title. It was the first double-overtime championship game in state history, according to the Star Tribune. Leah Schartzman scored at 10:55 in the second extra period to win the game for Breck. That was Schartzman's second goal of the game. Alexandra Wallin and Schartzman scored in the third period. The Mustangs advanced to the state Class A hockey championship with an 8-4 win over Red Wing on Friday afternoon. On Friday, Kate Schipper tied a state tournament record with four goals in the second period for the Mustangs (26-2-1). The Mustangs used two third-period goals to defeat Eveleth-Gilbert 6-4 on Saturday in St. Paul
The Breck girls hockey team finished its season with a win Saturday, defeating Eveleth-Gilbert 6-4 in the Class A third place game at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Mustangs finished the state tournament 2-1, defeating New Ulm before losing to South St. Paul in the state semifinal on Friday. Breck used three first period goals to steal early momentum Saturday, with a goal by Milica McMillen and two scores by Prentice Basten. In the second, Kayla Mork notched a shorthanded goal at the 14:34 mark to make the score 4-1, but Eveleth-Gilbert stormed back. The Breck girls hockey team notched seven goals, killed off a 5-on-3 penalty with ease and outshot a helpless New Ulm squad 23-3 during the Class A quarterfinal’s second frame. The Mustangs beat the Bears 5-1 and earned a trip to next week's state hockey tournament.
The lyrics to “No Air” was heard even over the sound of the zamboni Thursday night as the Breck girls hockey team fired it up in the Mustangs' tunnel during the second intermission at the Parade Ice Garden. According to co-captain Kayla Mork, it's a motivational tool. But with 17 minutes left and holding a three-goal lead over rival Blake, it was the prize of victory that gave this melody its extra spark. The defending Section 5A champion Breck girls hockey team will play for a return trip to state after winning its semifinal matchup on Tuesday night as the Robbinsdale Cooper girls and boys basketball teams swept Spring Lake Park in North Suburban Conference play. Mustangs boys hockey and basketball teams claim victories, while girls fall on both court and rink.
Saturday was a busy day for the Breck basketball and hockey teams, with the Mustangs going 2-2 in their four varsity matchups as the boys squads earned a hardcourt victory in Duluth and a rink win at home. Boys Basketball: Breck 60, Duluth Marshall 52 The Breck boys basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a 60-52 victory up north at Duluth Marshall. Both teams were tied at 24-24 at halftime, before the Mustangs broke away with a 36-28 second half to secure the win and return to the Twin Cities with a 1-0 record. Guard Jeffrey Lurie led Breck with 22 points, while forward John Culliton recorded 13 points and guard William Culliton chipped in 11 points in the game.
