Bottineau Public Meetings Coming Up, Residents Reflect on Council Decision

With new Bottineau meetings scheduled, Golden Valley Patch reached out to two vocal residents to get both sides of the Bottineau debate.

The Bottineau Transitway is slowly becoming a reality. Plans show the transitway coming through Golden Valley, which has stirred quite a bit of controversy among residents and city leaders. Last December, the council voted to support the rail line through the city. Today, both the Met Council and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board are scheduling public meetings to move plans forward. Related: Met Council Will Hold Public Hearing on Bottineau The topic has generated discussions on Golden Valley Patch, so we reached out to two Patch users to get their take on the recent decision. "I was happy to see that the majority of the council members took the time to research the issue and made a decision that will help bring Light Rail through …

Met Council Will Hold Public Hearing on Bottineau

A public meeting will take place on March 7 followed by a public hearing on March 11.

In a press release last week, the Metropolitan Council announced that a public meeting about the Bottineau Transitway and additional Arterial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors will be held on March 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Robbinsdale City Hall. The meeting comes after the Met Council received and reviewed the Bottineau Transitway alternatives analysis. The 27 page document compiled by the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority explains why the light rail path through Golden Valley is preferred. On March 11, the Met Council will host a public hearing to accept comments about both proposed bus routes and the Bottineau Transitway. The hearing will begin at 5 p.m. at the Heywood Office Building Chambers in Minneapolis. “This is an important…

Bottineau Alternatives Analysis Spurs Community Chatter, Frustration

Find out what readers think about a recent analysis reviewed by the Golden Valley City Council that explains why light rail through Golden Valley might be best.

In an article published last week about the Bottineau Transitway and the locally preferred alternative,  Golden Valley Patch readers weren’t shy in expressing their opinions. Many readers were frustrated with information published in the Bottineau Transitway Alternatives Analysis.  The 27 page document was compiled by the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority and explains why the light rail path through Golden Valley is preferred. “D-1 would result in significantly less property and neighborhood impacts, improved travel time and greater cost effectiveness, and less disruption of roadway traffic operations,” the Policy Advisory Committee says in the analysis. Patch user Tom Ring said that he’d rather see more buses come through the …

Survey Finds Broad Support for Transit, Southwest LRT

Metro chambers commissioned the study to find out voters’ opinions about public transportation.

Support for the Southwest Light Rail Transit project has grown significantly over the past year and a majority of Minnesotans support a sales tax increase for transit, according to survey results announced Thursday. The memo that the bipartisan survey team produced on behalf of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce, St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce paints a picture of widespread support for transit in both the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. “Minnesotans understand that planning for economic growth and improving our region’s transportation system is just common sense,” a news release quoted Minneapolis Regional Chamber President Todd Klingel. “This survey shows there is strong support for …

New Bottineau Document Shows Why Light Rail Through Golden Valley is Preferred

The alternatives analysis shows that some North Minneapolis residents have concerns about the possibility of a light rail coming down Penn Avenue.

Faster travel time. More cost effective. Fewer traffic impacts. These are some of the D-1 alignment benefits outlined in a recently finished document that reviews Bottineau Transitway route alternatives. According to Golden Valley City Council documents, the Metropolitan Council received the Bottineau Transitway Alternatives Analysis on Jan. 9.  The 27 page document was compiled by the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority. The Met Council is expected to review and adopt the analysis—which explains why the light rail path through Golden Valley is preferred—in February. Upon adoption, the Met Council can apply for federal funding through the New Starts program.   The alternatives analysis says that the D-2 alignment, which would send …

The entire LRT regional system is based on building an ideal society with the smallest footprint on the land. The concept is flawed from the outset. It depends on redesigning how a society lives and functions. There are folks who think that the most environmentally developed in the world is New York City. The fallacy of this line of thought is that it becomes harder to impossible to live in a …   more ›

Golden Valley Council Votes ‘Yes’ to Light Rail Resolution

In a 3-2 vote, the Golden Valley City Council adopted a resolution of support for the Bottineau Transitway locally preferred alternative Tuesday night.

In a decision that Golden Valley City Councilmember Joanie Clausen characterized as one of the most difficult in her life, Clausen, Mayor Shep Harris, and Councilmember Mike Freiberg voted 'yes' on a resolution of support for the Bottineau Transitway locally preferred alternative at a Dec. 18 council meeting. "I want everyone here to know that I have heard all of your comments for and against this. I have weighed-in. I have worked hard. I have walked the line. I have ridden the rail. I have talked to residents," Clausen said. "And I have been doing my job." To Clausen, her job is to look at the big picture and ensure that Golden Valley has an opportunity to get questions answered about the Bottineau Transitway. Last summer, Clausen, along …

I think Council Member Clausen sold her vote out too cheap. Switching her vote on the Bottineau LRT is worth more than 911 Dispatch Service given the disclosure made in an article in the December 26th Star Tribune (http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/184775001.html). It appears the city of Minneapolis and Hennepin County have some plans that were secret until after the Golden Valley City…   more ›

Golden Valley to Decide on Bottineau at Tuesday Council Meeting

Tonight, councilmembers will review a resolution of support for the Bottineau Transitway locally preferred alternative, a pathway that would send a light rail through Golden Valley.

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Or dreading. During their meeting tonight, Dec. 18, the Golden Valley City Council will vote on a resolution that would allow more studies to be done on the Bottineau Transitway’s locally preferred alternative--a light rail path that would bring the train through Golden Valley. If the council adopts the resolution of support, the Metropolitan Council will vote to incorporate the Golden Valley alignment into the 2030 Twin Cities Regional Transportation Policy Plan. This would make the project eligible for federal funding, according to council documents. While an environmental study that evaluates alternate routes for the Bottineau Transitway is underway, if the resolution is approved, the …

Clausen Won't Let History Influence Decision on Bottineau

Why is Golden Valley City Councilmember Joanie Clausen inclined to vote 'yes' when it comes to conducting studies on the Bottineau Transitway and the locally preferred alternative?

Golden Valley City Councilmember Joanie Clausen has a lot to think about. In one week, councilmembers will vote on a resolution of support for the Bottineau Transitway locally preferred alternative (LPA). With two councilmembers opposed to the transitway, and with two for it, Clausen said that she feels like the decision is in her hands. “It’s a lot of pressure,” Clausen told Patch. “But I’m doing my homework.” On Dec. 13, Clausen, Councilmember DeDe Scanlon and other city staff toured existing light rail lines with Hennepin County officials. The tour was designed to give councilmembers and staff a clear picture of what light rail really is. “I want to look at the whole picture and make an informed decision,” Clausen said. “As an elected …

I am skeptical of the study process, particularly when what this really sounds like is permission to start the engineering work, meaning making investments in building the line. This has not been clear, what initiating engineering work really means. Could we get more information on that in the Patch? An environmental impact study is one thing, and engineering is another. Much harder to pull back …   more ›

Readers React: Bottineau Transitway

When it comes to Patch articles about Bottineau, what do readers think?

Over the last two weeks, Golden Valley Patch has published multiple articles about various issues surrounding the Bottineau Transitway and the D-1 alignment, which would bring the light rail through Golden Valley. There was no shortage of reader interaction. ** On Nov. 29, Patch summarized various comments made by residents who attended the Nov. 28 public hearing about the Bottineau Transitway. Patch user Andy Snope said: The impression I got from last nights meeting was that people were in favor of light rail however "not in their back yard". The ironic thing about that attitude is that those same people have no problem with the route that cuts a neighborhood in half and razes over 100 homes in North Minneapolis. Sheila Bahl disagreed and…
