The Golden Valley-based agency awarded Alice Seagren with a piece of artwork to thank her for her service.
At their monthly meeting in Golden Valley, the Board of Directors of the Perpich Center for Arts Education honored outgoing Minnesota Education Commissioner Alice Seagren. Appointed by Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2004, Commissioner Seagren was responsible for operations and policymaking for all aspects of K-12 education. In that capacity, she worked closely with the Perpich Center, the Golden Valley-based state agency charged with supporting the arts in Minnesota schools. "This agency is unique and I am proud to be a longstanding supporter," Seagren said. Seagren was presented with a framed etching donated by an Arts High School graduate. The portrait, of an Iron Ranger, was selected because it represents Commissioner Seagren's outreach to …

Alumni take the opportunity to share their wisdom with current Arts High School students.
Friday afternoon at the Perpich Center for Arts Education, dance instructor Mary Harding asked 40 people to sit in large a circle in the dance studio. “Ask about their transition to college from here,” Harding uttered to her students. The people to whom she was referring were alumni of Arts High School who had gathered for the school’s annual alumni day. One by one, each of the former students named off the respective colleges they attended after graduation, the places where they worked, or the television shows for which they had auditioned. “It’s good for them to see the mirrors of themselves and to see the window they can go through,” Harding said, referring to her students. Senior dance student Brittany Zales admits she found the …

Two classes at the Perpich Center for Arts Education inspired various works of art.
In the lower gallery of Arts High School Thursday night, students showed off a collection of artwork in the form of paintings, written word, song and dance. "These are expressions about their feelings and their dreams," said Tom Kanthak, a teacher at Arts High School. Some who view the work can't believe it was done by teenagers. "Everything is just awesome. I mean, look at it. I can't believe these are like, children," said Aaneesah Amatullah, an Arts High parent. Yet age doesn't limit the abilities of the juniors and seniors who created these " "native-inspired" works of art. "We created a space here for the kids to show the work that's emerged from the two classes - the Native American Culture and Arts Class, and the American Indian …

While some alumni come back simply to visit, Arts High School Students return to teach.
When Rachel Damon was a student at the Arts High School in Golden Valley, she dreamed of a career as a professional dancer. Through her talent, hard work and education, she made that dream come true. Today she has her own Chicago-based dance company. The Rachel Damon/Synapse Arts Dancers are on stage this week (Jan. 6-8) at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis. The 1999 graduate of the Arts High School returned to her alma mater with six dancers from her company in tow. She taught a class in the same dance studio where she spent many hours as a high school student, perfecting her technique. "I loved Arts High School," she said. "I love visiting Golden Valley when I'm back in town. It set me on the path I'm on, to make dance a part of…

Perpich Arts High School theater students learn the importance of movement and unity on stage through the classical play, Tibetan Book of the Dead, which they will perform this week.
Glasses perched on her nose, Bonnie Bottoms, Associate Director and Choreographer for theater at Perpich Arts High School, squinted at the notes she'd taken during Monday's dress rehearsal for the student play, Tibetan Book of the Dead. Instructions followed. "Everyone more intense freezes," she said. "Duncan rise as Cecilia comes down from back bend." With only two dress rehearsals left, Bottoms wanted to make sure everything was perfect. Beginning tonight, students in Barbara Morin's theater class at Perpich Arts High School will be performing a play based on a 2000-year-old Buddhist text of the same name. The play is an ensemble written by Jean-Claude van Itallie and features ethereal choreography as students recite lines from the …

One Golden Valley family has a unique relationship with the Perpich Center for Arts Education.
Situated in a hall at the Perpich Center for Arts Education is a group of photographs by Golden Valley resident — and Arts High School Student — Florence Blessing. "I wanted to show that humans are the mediators of nature and industrialism, and we kind of control the balance of the world," she said as she admired her work. This particular assignment is just one example of how students at Arts High School can express their creativity on a daily basis. "I played piano since I was three," Blessing said. "But then my freshman year I decided to come for media and so I got my portfolio together and auditioned and here I am." Yet the significant thing about Florence attending Arts High School is that her brother Andrew, her sister Julia, her …
