Mustangs girls hockey team loses to Lakeville South on Friday night.
It wasn't the kind of Friday that the Breck girls hockey team had hoped for as the Mustangs lost, 6-2, to Lakeville South at the Anderson Ice Arena. The Cougars, ranked fifth in Class AA, blew open a 1-1 contest with a three-goal second period to turn a close game into a rout. Forward Carly Schaeder gave the Mustangs the initial lead with a goal at 2:07 of the first period, however, the Cougars tallied six-straight scores to cement the victory before Breck forward Kate Schipper notched the final goal of the contest at 11:50 of the third period. Goaltender Taylor Niesen made 32 saves in the Mustangs net in the loss. Breck, who dropped to 6-7 with the loss, takes on the Minneapolis Novas at Parade Ice Gardens at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Casey O'Brien helped save Andrew Bauer's life after he had a heart attack at Anderson Ice Arena last month.
Andrew Bauer and Casey O'Brien don't have much of an association with Golden Valley. Bauer lives in St. Michael and O'Brien lives in St. Paul. But both men found themselves in the Golden Valley City Council Chambers on the night of Dec. 7 for a very special reason. Police Chief Stacy Altonen wanted to honor O'Brien with a Citizen's Commendation Award for saving Bauer's life. On Nov. 14, the American Hockey Association's Ice Sages defeated the Fighting Loons 3-2 at Anderson Ice Arena. Bauer was the Ice Sages' goalie. "He held us to our fewest goal scoring so far this year," O'Brien said of Bauer, his opponent that night. But it's what happened off the ice that proved to be the most significant part of the day. "Well we had just completed …

Mustangs boys hockey team scores eight goals in 31 shots to blow out Zephyrs at Anderson Arena.
The 2010 Class A state boys hockey champions began their title defense in impressive manner on Tuesday night as Breck shutout visiting Mahtomedi, 8-0, at the Anderson Ice Arena.
