Sami Rahamim, a St. Louis Park High student and the son of slain Accent Signage owner Reuven Rahamim, spoke to CNN on Wednesday about gun violence and meeting with President Barack Obama. Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison invited Rahamim to attend Tuesday’s State of the Union as part of an effort to step up pressure for tighter gun control laws. Each member of Congress gets to bring just one guest to the House gallery during the speech. Reuven Rahamim, 61, died Sept. 27 when an employee who had just been fired took out a gun and shot Rahamim and other Accent employees. Andrew Engeldinger then shot himself. President called on voters to pressure their legislators to pass gun control measures.
Speaking to a crowd of local dignitaries and law enforcement officers on Monday, President Barack Obama called on voters to pressure Congress to act on curbing gun violence. "We've suffered too much pain to stand by and do nothing," he said. "We don't have to agree on everything to agree it's time to do something," he added. What did the Twin Cities think about Obama's visit on social media? Adopting universal background checks, banning military-style assault weapons, limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, and putting more police officers on the street are "common sense," bipartisan measures to reduce gun violence, the President said. Sen. Ron Latz (DFL-District 46) wants the Legislature to convene hearings on how authorities can get better information on people with signs of mental illness in order to prevent shootings like the Sept. 27 incident in Minneapolis in which six died, including shooter Andrew Engeldinger. “The Accent Signage tragedy was the largest workplace shooting in Minnesota,” a Monday news release quoted Latz, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee. “We need to ensure that people are safe at work, and don’t fear for their lives when they punch their time clocks or sit down at their desks. A shooting Thursday at a Minneapolis neighborhood business has sent ripples throughout the Twin Cities as victims are identified. The suspect, who Minneapolis Police confirmed was released from his job earlier that day, killed himself.
UPDATE (5:51 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28) Minneaplis Police had reported earlier that Engeldinger returned to the workplace in the afternoon after being fired the morning of Sept. 27. Police now say the earlier reports were incorrect and Engeldinger was brought into the front office at the end of the work day to be terminated and then took out the weapon and began shooting in the office. ******* UPDATE (4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28) - Minneapolis Police and staff at Hennepin County Medical Center have confirmed a sixth victim in the shooting at Accent Signage Systems has died.
