Jack McGinn is considering Harvard, Stanford and Dartmouth.
Perfect ACT scores are not easy to get. Among the graduating class of 2011, 1.6 million students nationwide took the college entrance test—and only 704 of them scored a 36. For the Sept. 10 test administered across the Twin Cities, only seven metro students got perfect scores. Benilde-St. Margaret's senior Jack McGinn was one of them. “I’m very grateful for the education I’ve received from BSM,” McGinn said in a news release. The Red Knight senior is considering Harvard, Stanford and Dartmouth as possible destinations for college. In addition to his academic prowess, McGinn has also been a decorated athlete at BSM. The composite score for Armstrong and Cooper was slightly lower than the state, but higher than the national averages.
The average ACT score for Robbinsdale students in 2011 was higher than the national average and lower than the state. The composite score of Robbinsdale Cooper and Robbinsdale Armstrong high schools was 22.6. The composite score of the state this year was 22.9 and the U.S. score was 21.1. The composite score combines the students' scores in English, math, reading and science. The Robbinsdale score was the same as it was in 2010, and 0.2 higher than it was in 2009 (see the PDF with this story). “Both high schools are working hard to increase participation in rigorous coursework,” said Superintendent Aldo Sicoli. “We know that rigorous coursework in high school leads to further success down the road.” The percentage of high schoolers in the …

Scores reflect ACT preparedness and career options.
Pencils are down and the results are in. Eighth grade students at Robbinsdale Middle School (RMS) and Plymouth Middle School (PMS) recently received the results of the Explore Test. This test, created by the same company that writes the ACT, provides students with nationally normed scoring information to help them better prepare for the ACT college entrance exam and also provides feedback on possible career choices. According to the district office, 419 PMS and 163 RMS eighth grade students chose to take this optional exam offered in November. Because the test is written by the ACT Corporation, it gives students an early look at the style of the exam questions and provides both subject specific and a composite scores. Students are …

National math test scores continue to be disappointing. This poor trend persists in spite of new texts, standardized tests with attached implied threats, or laptops in the class. At some point, maybe we should admit that math, as it is taught currently and in the recent past, seems irrelevant to a large percentage of grade school kids. Why blame a sixth grade student or teacher trapped by …   more ›
