Board Votes to Allow Golden Valley to Use County 911 Dispatch

What does switching to Hennepin County's dispatch system mean for Golden Valley residents?

At a Dec. 11 board meeting, the Hennepin County Board voted to include the City of Golden Valley in the county's public safety dispatch system beginning in 2014. The change to move 911 dispatch services from the City of Edina to Hennepin County will save the City of Golden Valley about $150,000, according to Mayor Shep Harris. "Residents will still get the same top quality service that they receive today when they call 911," Harris said. "But the shift will allow the City to either address other issues that we’ve cut in our budget, or shift resources, or reduce taxes." Driver Smokes, Starts Fire, Answers Phone, Gets Warning

Police say it's a good example of why more people need to call 911.

Last week, my husband and I were heading west on Minnesota Highway 62, about to head north on Highway 100 when a tan Chevy Suburban crossed two lanes of traffic without using a turn signal to get in front of us and make the exit. We followed the truck and watched as it swerved onto the shoulder and back and forth between lanes.   I grabbed my phone and called 911. I told the dispatcher this wasn't an emergency but that it might become one. She had me stay on the phone until a State Patrol trooper could meet up with us and stop the Suburban. The trooper moved in front of us and turned on his lights. We found our exit, shook our heads and were soon talking about something else. About a half-hour later, the trooper called to thank me.
