Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek is currently overseas in Israel, attending an international counterterrorism program. Dubbed "2012 Law Enforcement Mission to Israel," the program is intended to provide attendees with a better understanding of homeland security and countering violent extremism that impacts both Israel and the U.S. The program includes discussions with Israeli government officials, military officers and leading academics, in addition to discussions regarding emergency preparedness from Israeli first responders including police, rescue and bomb disposal. A Hennepin County grand jury cleared a Golden Valley police officer for his involvement in a fatal shooting last September on Interstate 394. According to reports, Officer Robert Zarrett of the Golden Valley Police Department spotted a car driving 90 mph on the interstate on Sept. 22, 2011. The driver was Katherine Marie Gordon, 58. "Gordon did not pull over, and her car wove in and out of the traffic lanes, still at a high rate of speed," according to a news release posted Thursday afternoon on the city's website. A Northfield man has been arrested for being passed out drunk behind the wheel of his pickup in Golden Valley – his fourth drunken-driving arrest in 10 years. Nicholas James Vititoe, 33, is charged with two felonies after his May 4 arrest: first-degree DWI and refusal to submit to a chemical test, each of which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine. Vititoe remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to make a first appearance on the charges Tuesday in Hennepin County District Court. Robbinsdale Armstrong High School prom-goers were evacuated from the Earle Brown Heritage Center last night after a bomb threat was received, but nothing was found.
It's a night you're never supposed to forget and for Robbinsdale Armstrong High School students this year's prom was just that. At about 9:14 p.m. Saturday night May 5 a call was made on the Brooklyn Park Police non-emergency line that a bomb was going to detonate at 10 p.m. at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center. No explosive devices or suspicious items were found. According to Brooklyn Center Commander Brian Peters, there were three events happening at the Center at the time, two weddings and Armstrong's prom. Kalonyea Wopea reportedly collapsed Thursday while playing basketball.
A Robbinsdale Cooper student collapsed and died Thursday at the YMCA in New Hope, according to reports. The Star Tribune reported that Kalonyea Wopea, 17, was playing basketball at the time. He could not be revived and "was pronounced dead at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale," according to the Star Tribune story. MPR said Robbinsdale spokeswoman Tia Clasen said the school provided grief counselors to students on Friday. "It's just going to be the school coming to grips with this and trying to provide as much counseling as the students need in the next days and weeks," Clasen told MPR.
