Honeywell and Cooper High School Team Up to Give Back

About 200 volunteers from Honeywell and Cooper High School spent the day at Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River.

The Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River was speckled with red t-shirts as volunteers spread across the historic farm working to revitalize the landscape. Volunteers from Honeywell, Rebuilding Together and Cooper High School spent the day doing various projects on the farm, which included building a new wooden fence around the property and fixing picnic tables. "Honeywell does a lot of volunteer work throughout the year," District General Manager Ben Lampron said. "We all live and work in the area and so it just makes sense for us to give back." Honeywell employees had no problem chopping logs and hauling them around the historic site. The pieces were assembled into an old style wooden fence. Bob Quist, the site manager at Kelley Farm, says the…

Looking at the State of Hennepin County

County Board Chair Mike Opat delivered the 2012 address today in Plymouth.

Hennepin County Board Chair Mike Opat gave the State of the County address today at the Plymouth Creek Center in Plymouth. The TwinWest Chamber of Commerce hosted the event. A State of the County address hasn't been given since 2009. The reason? "There have been no speeches because given the state of the economy and federal and state budgets there wasn’t much I could say that was interesting enough to warrant an event like this," Opat said. "Like the rest of public-sector America…we have been hunkered down and focused on the basics." During his speech, Opat touched on changes to several areas of the County, that were also highlighted in a county press release: Budget/Finances "The State of Hennepin County is one of flat budgets and …

Parents Talk: An Evil Clown Stalks Children in the Name of Birthday Fun

Apparently there is an "evil" clown that is hired to scare a child in the days leading up to his or her birthday. What?

A couple weeks ago, our Parents Talk discussion was on creepy kids toys. Many agreed that a clown, anything having to do with a clown or anything resembling a clown was straight up creepy. Well, an actor in the Swiss city of Lucerne has set himself up as the "evil" birthday clown. According to the Huffington Post and the Austrian Times, for a fee, parents can hire this psychotic clown—played by actor Dominic Deville—to leave menacing, booby-trapped letters for their children. He will also tease through text messages and phone calls. Deville warns the children they are being watched and that they will soon be the victim of an attack. At the end of the terror-filled week, the birthday boy or girl catches a cake in the face. According to the …

This does seem a bit cruel and unusual. However, I might be inclined to hire someone to mess with my 18+ child (I don't have one...this is hypothetical). That actually could be kind of funny..."Punking" your college freshman son/daughter could be cool. For instance, maybe you could hire an impostor dorm roommate, who would be the biggest jerk of all time. Then, a few days in, you could reveal the…   more ›

(PHOTOS) Hopkins Students Learn With Playschool Children They Teach

The Child Psychology class’ Royal Den offers 3- to 5-year-olds a fun learning experience—and valuable lessons for the high school students leading it.

Hopkins High School senior Marisa Schulz has practical experience babysitting and theoretical knowledge she gained from her child psychology classes. But when she started working in the Royal Den playschool, she found the situation to be unique. She didn’t know the children as well as those she babysat, so it was harder to know what they wanted. Schulz had to develop fun activities and use skills she learned in class, such as saying no in positive way. “It’s a lot more difficult, to be honest,” Shulz said. Royal Den is the culmination of Patty Ormson’s Child Psychology II class. The high school students develop lessons that help the 3- to 5-year-olds exercise their math, science, art, music and motor skills. “It’s not just watching …
