Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities in Golden Valley

Plenty of opportunities for helping out the community are happening this fall, what would you like to do?

Looking for an opportunity to make a difference in your community? Here's a few volunteering opportunities in Golden Valley coming up this fall:

• The sixth annual Lilac Planting Party is  9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, brings people together to implement a vision of lilacs, shrubs, and flowers along the sides of Highway 55 through Golden Valley. This year volunteers will restore lilac beds disturbed by recent construction/rehabilitation of the MCES sanitary sewer system along the north side of Hwy 55 between Douglas Drive and Glenwood Avenue.

Volunteers will meet at the Welcome Center, 6681 Country Club Drive (Gurstel Chargo). Registration is 8:30 to 9 a.m. and planting will be followed by a celebration lunch until 2 pm. Individuals and groups are welcome and you can register online.

This grass-roots community beautification effort is a collaboration between Bridge Builders, the City of Golden Valley, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Community Roadside Landscaping Partnership Program.

• The third annual Valley Volunteer Day  is also Saturday, Sept 28. It is an event that's planned and coordinated by a group of volunteers to fulfill needs around the community. Activities this year include: buckthorn busting from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Golden Valley Historical Society, 6731 Golden Valley Rd; pumpkin painting from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Peaceful Valley Montessori Academy, 5530 Golden Valley Rd; trail clearing from 9 a.m. to 11 am at the School of Engineering and Arts (SEA), 1751 Kelly Dr.; and trash pickup from 9 a.m to 11 a.m. at Glenview Terrace Park, 2351 Zenith Ave. N. and St Croix Park, 5850 St Croix Ave. N.

Individuals and groups are welcome and you can register online.

• The Fall Raking Blitz, will be from Thursday, Oct. 24 through Monday, Nov. 4, was planned by Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a Bridge Builders group of local churches and non-profit organizations whose goal is to match community volunteers with homeowners needing assistance with home maintenance.

Based on availability of volunteers, raking teams will be dispatched from Calvary Church, 7520 Golden Valley Rd, to homes that ask for service.

To schedule leaf-raking service: Call the Senior Community Services HOME Program at 952-746-4046 by Saturdya, Oct 19. Volunteers will rake and bag leaves and take them to the curb. Residents are responsible for providing biodegradable bags and arranging for disposal.

To help with the raking: Contact Volunteer Coordinator Sandy Werts at 763-593-2341 or sign up online. Groups and individuals are welcome. Students must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers should dress for the weather and bring gloves, rakes, and any other equipment needed.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a collaboration between H.O.M.E., Calvary Lutheran Church, Valley Community Presbyterian Church, and PRISM, with support from the city of Golden Valley.
