Humane Society Sends Team to Joplin, Missouri

They may bring back animals that need a home after the devastating May 22nd tornado.

While people here in Golden Valley and in neighboring north Minneapolis continue to deal with the damage left behind by the May 22nd tornado, people in Joplin, Mo., were hit much harder that day.  One third of the city is gone, hundreds are dead, and many missing or displaced animals need help.

That's why Golden Valley's is sending a team there.

Immediately following the tornado, the ASPCA’s Emergency Response Team worked with the Joplin Humane Society to set up a temporary shelter and provide resources and personnel to care for the animals.

"Since then, Animal Humane Society has been in contact with the ASPCA and offered our assistance," Carrie Libera, spokesperson for the Golden Valley humane society, said in a news release.  "They agreed to contact us when they needed more personnel, and that call came this week."

Libera says the team of six will travel to today and return next Wednesday. They will work in the Emergency Animal Shelter which is currently housing nearly 800 animals, primarily dogs and cats.

She says the team from Animal Humane Society will assist primarily with cleaning, feeding, and caring for the animals and may also assist in admitting new animals and reuniting pets with their owners. Additionally, Animal Humane Society may be asked to take in some of the unclaimed animals for adoption in Minnesota.
