For Pet Owners, Spay Day is Every Day

The Golden Valley Humane Society is stepping up efforts to get your pets spayed and neutered.

Taking part in National Spay Day this week, Golden Valley's performed spay/neuter surgeries in a Mobile Services Unit for the public on Tuesday.

Spay Day is a national campaign meant to spread the word about the importance of surgical sterilization of animals. In addition to health and behavioral benefits, the Humane Society says spaying and neutering helps reduce pet over-population and decreases the number of animals euthanized in shelters.

According to Spay USA, each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. At a rate like that, the demand for homes for the animals is far greater than what is usually available for them.

If you missed Spay Day, you certainly don't need to wait until next year to do your part.  In fact, the Humane Society will also be offering low-cost spay/neuter services to those of limited means in the Twin Cities beginning in May. The sterilization services will be available through a partnership with the Humane Society and a local private practice veterinarian.

Services will also be provided in a mobile service unit that will travel to local communities where there is a high volume of unwanted litters and stray animals.  Contact Golden Valley's for more information.

The ultimate goal for the Animal Humane Society is to provide an additional 25,000 surgeries annually.
