Tree Debris Drop-Off Site Closes at 8 p.m. July 3, Emergency Pick Up Continues

Also some reminders on how to prepare for any tree debris pick up and ash wood disposal.

The temporary tree debris drop off site at 9305 10th Ave (south side of the street) will close Wednesday, July 3, at 8 pm. The site opened June 24 so Golden Valley residents and businesses could dispose of tree debris from the series of bad storms in June.

To further help residents dispose of tree debris, the Golden Valley City Council authorized a one-time emergency curbside brush pickup. The pickup started July 1 in the area south of Hwy 55, and crews are making good progress there, said Mark Ray, the city’s street maintenance supervisor.

Trucks will then move into the area north of Hwy 55 and east of Douglas Drive, which will may happen as soon as the middle of next week, Ray said. When that area is completed, crews will pick up brush in the area north of Hwy 55 and west of Douglas Dr.

Please note that this is an emergency collection in response to the severe storms in late June. The focus is to remove large brush piles from the community in a timely manner. Crews use large equipment as part of the removal process, and there may be a small amount of twigs and debris left behind. Please dispose of this yard waste material through your normal yard waste service, by taking it to a yard waste site or by contacting your trash hauling company.

Preparing Tree Debris For Pickup

• Residents are responsible for getting brush and logs to the curb for pickup. Here’s how to prepare your tree debris for pickup:

• Crews will make one sweep through each residential neighborhood, picking up tree debris only (no stumps).

• Condense brush and logs into two separate piles, one pile of each per household. Logs and brush can be no longer than 12 feet. Please make piles as large as possible.

• Keep piles completely clear of sidewalks, mailboxes, streetlights and sign poles, landscaping and fences, overhead tree branches, and power lines. The contractor uses trucks with automated loading arms to pick up the brush piles. If your brush is stacked near a restricted area or tossed in a pile rather than stacked, it will be left behind. The contractor will not load brush by hand.

• If piles don't fit between the curb and sidewalk, place them on the boulevard behind the sidewalk.

• No leaves, grass clippings, stumps, roots, building lumber, landscape timbers, or bags of garbage will be picked up. If any of these items are mixed in the brush stacks, the entire stack will be left behind. The contractor will not sort through brush stacks for acceptable material.

Hiring A Tree Contractor
Downed and damaged trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. When hiring a tree contractor, use the following tips for optimal results:

• Start by checking the phone directory under Trees or Tree Service. Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations.

• Beware of door-knockers. Most reputable companies have all the work they can handle without going door-to-door.

• Ask for certificates of insurance, including proof of liability for personal and property damage and worker’s compensation. Call the insurance company to make certain the policy is current. Under some circumstances, you can be held financially responsible if an uninsured worker is hurt on your property.

• Never pay in advance for the work.

Ash Wood Disposal
Federal quarantine requires all ash wood be taken to designated disposal sites (like Golden Valley’s temporary drop off site). Ash wood also cannot be moved out of Hennepin County.
