Make a Historic Rug, Visit the Farm and Canoeing: Family Events in the Three Rivers Park District

Free Family Fun Day: Track the Naturalist — Summer Edition
Sunday, June 2, from 1-3 p.m., at Kroening Interpretive Center, in North Mississippi Regional Park, Minneapolis. The naturalist is missing!  Follow the trail she left to find out where she went and what she saw.  Enjoy a prize. This program is free and open to all ages.
Feeding Frenzy Sunday, June 2, from 1-3 p.m., at Eastman Nature Center, in Elm Creek Park Reserve, Dayton. Look on as the salamander snacks, turtles taste, and frogs feed. Different animals will be fed throughout the afternoon. Bring a camera! This program is free and open to all ages. 

Drawing with a Hand Lens
 Sunday, June 2, from 1:30-3 p.m., at Lowry Nature Center, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Discover amazing natural details with a hand lens, and sketch what you see. Learn to be observant and record on paper the miniature villages of lichen, moss and tree bark. Hand lens is included. Cost is $6 and reservations are required. Free Family Fun Day: Pond Exploration Sunday, June 2, from 3-4 p.m., at Richardson Nature Center, in Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Bloomington. Meet a naturalist at the Nature Center’s dock and use a net and bowl to scoop critters out of the pond. Discover the many small animals that live in a pond and make up the aquatic food chain. This program is free and open to all ages.   

Saturday Morning on the Farm Saturday, June 8, from 9:30 a.m.-noon, at Gale Woods Farm, Minnetrista. Explore the Gale Woods Farm barn where you can meet animals, assist a Gale Woods farmer with chores, and participate in other seasonal farm activities. Cost is $5 and this program is open to all ages. 
Make Your Own Historic Rug Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m.-noon, at Elm Creek Park Reserve, Maple Grove. Learn how 19th century pioneers made rugs for their homes. Bring a hula hoop and old t-shirts (that you don’t mind tearing up). Learn to make your own woven rag rug. Cost is $5 and reservations are required. Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Lowry Nature Center, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Lowry will have several activity stations set up for families to enjoy getting outside together. Search for insects, scoop for pond critters, meet some live animals, and look for birds. This program is free and open to all ages.   

Grimm Farmhouse Open House Saturday, June 8, from 1-4 p.m., at The Grimm Farm, in Carver Park Reserve, Victoria. Step back in time and explore Wendelin Grimm’s farm.  See the restored 1870s house and fields where Grimm, a German immigrant, experimented with his alfalfa. Hear how his work transformed the Upper Midwest into America’s dairy belt. Experience the hands-on work and play of a late 1800s Minnesota farm. This program is free and open to all ages.   

Family Canoeing Saturday, June 8, from 4-6 p.m., at Hyland Lake Park Reserve, Bloomington. This family-friendly lesson for beginners is designed around having fun, being safe, and learning proper paddling techniques. Participants will learn water safety, entering and exiting a canoe, and when to use different paddle strokes. All equipment is provided. Cost is $15 and reservations are required.
