Final Weekend For Southbound Hwy 169 Closure Starts Friday Night

Light at the end of the tunnel: weather permitting, this weekend's closure will be the last one.

Motorists traveling along Hwy 169 on the weekends this summer have been encountering lane closures between Maple Grove/Brooklyn Park and Golden Valley. This weekend is the final southbound lane closure on Highway 169 between 77th Avenue and Highway 55 as crews resurface the roadway.

The closure begins 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, southbound Hwy 169 between Hwy 55 in Golden Valley/Plymouth and 77th Avenue in Brooklyn Park/Maple Grove. All southbound lanes will reopen by 5 a.m., Monday, Aug. 19.

During the closure, motorists should use County Road 81, Interstates 94, 394, and 494 and Highway 100 as alternative routes.

Prior to this weekend, motorists have experienced seven weekend closures of this segment of the highway. Weather permitting this weekend’s closure will be the last closure. Throughout the past 10 years, extensive repairs to the 7.5 mile stretch of the highway have prolonged the life of the road.

Current cracks in the road, declining pavement ride quality indexes and drainage issues necessitate pavement reconstruction. The $12.2 million project will improve the existing and future mobility of the road and provide a smoother road surface. The project also includes installing new guardrails, and improving bus lanes and pedestrian accessibility.
