Sports Roundup: Several Local Skiers Qualify For State

Hopkins girls and boys basketball teams top Lake Conference rivals; section ski meets aplenty on Tuesday.

Tuesday's winter sun saw a number of local Nordic and alpine ski teams competing in their respective sectional championship meets and as the sun fell, it was area hardcourts that caught the sports spotlight as the Hopkins girls and boys basketball squads swept Minnetonka.

Nordic Skiing: Three Cooper, One Armstrong Skier Qualify For State

Three members of the Robbinsdale Cooper and one racer from the Robbinsdale Armstrong Nordic ski teams qualified for next week's state meet at the Section 5 championships at Camp Ripley.

Zach Pierson will represent the Hawks at state after qualifying individually in the boys race with a time of 33 minutes, one second as his team took eighth with 262 points.

Cooper's Ellie Evans and Kaelyn Cooper also qualified with respective times of 39:12 and 39:55, as did Armstrong's Veronica DeSalvo in 38:24. The Falcons and Hawks took second and eighth in the team standings with respective scores of 350 and 265.

The state Nordic ski meet is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Alpine Skiing: Breck, Hopkins send boys to state meet

Both Breck and Hopkins will be represented at the boys state alpine ski meet as each team had one individual qualify at the Section 5 meet at Afton Alps.

The Royals' Brett Bremer finished third among skiers not already headed to state as part of a team with a time of 58.42, while the Mustangs' Peter Kiesel took ninth in 1:01.6.

In the team standings, Hopkins took third and Breck 10th among the boys squads; Armstrong placed 15th and Cooper took 16th.

No local girls qualified for state as Hopkins took 10th, Armstong 12th and Breck 14th.

The state meet is slated to take place on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at Giant's Ridge in Biwabik.

Hopkins Girls Basketball:  Royals 84, Minnetonka 52

The Hopkins girls basketball team improved to 20-1 overall and 3-1 in the Lake Conference with an 84-52 home win over Minnetonka.

Nia Coffey led all scorers with 15 points, while Royals teammates Brianna Williams and TT Starks scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Hopkins hosts Edina on Friday at 7 p.m.

Hopkins Boys Basketball: Royals 86, Minnetonka 62

An 87-62 win at Minnetonka improved the Hopkins boys basketball team to 17-1 overall and 2-1 in the Lake.

Marvin Singleton scored 18 points to lead the Royals, with Joe Coleman netting 16 points, Zach Stahl 15 points and Siyani Chambers 14 points.

Hopkins hosts Minneapolis Patrick Henry at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

Cooper Boys Basketball: Hawks 75, North Branch 53

The Robbinsdale Cooper boys basketball team defeated North Branch, 75-53, to improve to 13-6 overall and 7-3 in the North Suburban Conference.

Individual statistics were not available; the Hawks travel to Fridley for a 7:15 p.m. start on Friday night.

Cooper Girls Basketball: Hawks 64, North Branch 39

A 64-39 home win over North Branch improved the Robbinsdale Cooper girls basketball team to 12-9 overall and 10-1 in the North Suburban.

Chelsey McGee led the Hawks and all scorers with 18 points, with Talayiah Howard-Rich and Kwanisha Patterson notching 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Cooper hosts Fridley at 7:15 p.m. Friday night.

Cooper Boys Hockey: Chisago Lakes 4, Hawks 1

Steven Cox posted the lone goal of the game for the Robbinsdale Cooper boys hockey team as the Hawks fell, 4-1, to visiting Chisago Lakes.

The loss dropped Cooper to 11-11 overall and 2-8 in the North Suburban; the Hawks travel to East Bethel Ice Arena to play St. Francis at 7 p.m. Saturday night.

Armstrong Boys Hockey: Maple Grove 8, Falcons 2

The Robbinsdale Armstrong boys hockey team fell to 12-9 overall and 8-8 in the Northwest Suburban Conference with an 8-2 loss to Maple Grove at the New Hope Ice Arena.

Luke Seaberg and Matt Ripka scored for the Falcons in the contest, moved from its original Dec. 11 date due to the snowstorm on that day.

Armstrong travels to Anoka for a 3 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon.

Armstrong Boys Basketball: Park Center 70, Falcons 62

The Robbinsdale Armstrong boys basketball team lost, 70-62, at Park Center to fall to 15-5 overall and 10-4 in the Northwest Suburban.

Marquel Curtis led the Falcons with 22 points, while K.J. Bluford scored 15 points and Jaevon Walton 11 points.

Armstrong travels to Maple Grove for a 7 p.m. start on Friday.

Armstrong Girls Basketball: Park Center 51, Falcons 40

The Robbinsdale Armstrong girls basketball team dropped a 51-40 Northwest Suburban matchup to Park Center to fall to 8-14 overall and 4-12 in the conference.

Kari Fossum and Carissa McKelvey tied for the Falcons' scoring lead with 10 points apiece in the loss.

Maple Grove visits Armstrong on Friday night for a 7 p.m. game.

Breck Girls Basketball: PACT Charter 50, Mustangs 43

A 50-43 non-conference loss at PACT Charter dropped the Breck girls basketball team's record to 7-9 on the season.

Nina Killingstad was the lone Mustangs player in double digits with 10 points in the game; Raven DuBois, Katie Dickinson and Nailah Hill each scored eight points apiece.

Breck, 4-7 in the Tri-Metro Conference, returns to circuit play at 5 p.m. Friday evening at St. Paul Academy.

Breck Boys Hockey: Mustangs 10, Minnehaha Academy 2

The Breck boys hockey team remained one-half game off the lead pace in the Tri-Metro with a 10-2 throttling of Minnehaha Academy at the Anderson Ice Arena.

Conor Anderle and Thomas Lindstrom each scored twice, with Keegan Iverson, Grant Opperman, Matt Colford, Austin Rudnick, Wesley Iverson and David Zosel each tallying one score apiece in the victory.

Breck travels to the State Fair Coliseum to play St. Paul Como Park at 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Breck Girls Hockey: Minnetonka 5, Mustangs 0

The Breck girls hockey team closed out the regular season in a 5-0 loss at Minnetonka to fall to 13-11-1 as the squad enters the playoffs.

The Mustangs, seeded second in Section 5A, take on St. Louis Park at 5:30 p.m. Friday night at the Parade Ice Garden.
