Sports Roundup: Local Teams Begin Post-Labor Day Schedules

The first day of school saw several Golden Valley-area squads in action.

Golden Valley-area athletic teams eased into their post-Labor Day schedules on Tuesday. Only a small sampling of squads returned to competition on the first day of school.

Hopkins Girls Soccer

A 0-0 tie at No. 3-ranked Edina got the Lake Conference schedule started for the Hopkins girls soccer team on Tuesday.

The deadlock gave the Royals a 2-1-1 record. It was the second of three consecutive games for the squad against ranked teams, the final contest of the stretch comes on Thursday, when Hopkins hosts No. 7 Eden Prairie at 5 p.m.

Jillaine Young leads the Royals with two goals on the season, with Cody Webster, Corbin Boyd, Paris Ebersviller and Leah Chase also netting goals so far this autumn.

Hopkins Boys Soccer

The Hopkins boys soccer team dropped to 1-3 on the season with a 4-0 loss at No. 2 Edina on Tuesday in its Lake Conference opener.

Since winning its first game of the year—1-0 at Chaska on Aug. 25—the Royals have yet to score a goal in any of their losses since. 

Hopkins returns home to take on No. 8 Eden Prairie at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Hopkins Girls Tennis

The Hopkins girls tennis team was rudely introduced to Lake Conference play by means of a 7-0 loss to Minnetonka on Tuesday. 

The defeat dropped the Royals to 4-2 in dual matches this season as the team prepares to host Minneapolis Southwest at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Cooper Boys Soccer

The Cooper boys soccer team fell 2-1 to visiting North Suburban Conference foe Chisago Lakes on Tuesday, dropping to 0-4 overall this season.

On the year, Bashiru Kormah leads the Hawks with two goals, while Joseph Lewis, Yamasu Roberts and Simeon Ogunyemi each have scored once this autumn.

Cooper hosts St. Francis at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Cooper Volleyball

A three-game sweep (6-25, 10-25, 17-25) against visiting Fridley in the North Suburban opener on Tuesday dropped the Cooper volleyball team to 1-2 on the season.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Hawks travel to Irondale at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Armstrong Boys Soccer

The Robbinsdale Armstrong boys soccer team opened its Northwest Suburban Conference season with a 2-1 defeat of visiting Champlin Park on Tuesday. 

Individual statistics were not made available. The Falcons play at Maple Grove at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Armstrong Girls Soccer

The Armstrong girls soccer team logged its first point of the season by means of a 0-0 tie against visiting Northwest Suburban rival Champlin Park on Tuesday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Falcons play at Maple Grove at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Breck Boys Soccer

By means of a 10-0 rout of visiting Providence Academy on Tuesday, the Breck boys soccer team improved to 2-3 on the season with its second-straight victory.

Andrew Headrick leads the team with eight points on five assists and three goals, while Andrew Stuempfig is tops on the Mustangs with for goals to his name.

Breck hosts Tri-Metro Conference rival Minnehaha Academy at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Breck Girls Soccer

The Breck girls soccer team fell to 1-3 on the year with a 2-1 loss at Providence Academy in Plymouth on Tuesday night. 

Individual statistics were not made available. The Mustangs play at Minnehaha Academy—the No. 6-ranked team in Class A—at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Breck Volleyball

The Breck volleyball team dropped to 1-3 on the season following a four-game match loss (16-25, 13-25, 25-23, 13-25) at DeLaSalle on Tuesday. 

Individual statistics were not made available. The Mustangs host Concordia Academy at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Breck Girls Tennis

The Breck girls tennis team notched a 6-1 defeat of Tri-Metro opponent St. Anthony on Tuesday. 

Individual statistics were not made available. Eden Prairie hosted the Mustangs on Wednesday afternoon.

Results for scheduled Tuesday competitions involving Cooper girls soccer and Armstrong girls tennis were not available.
