Sports Roundup: Local Soccer Teams Turn Toward Postseason

Sectional tournaments beckon for Golden Valley-area soccer teams.

The autumn sports season continued its march this week as the regular-season came to a close for Golden Valley-area soccer teams, as local tennis teams competed in their sectional tournaments.

Robbinsdale Armstrong Girls Tennis

The seventh-seeded Robbinsdale Armstrong girls tennis team won its first two rounds of Section 6AA Tournament play this week, topping No. 16 Columbia Heights 7-0 on Wednesday and DeLaSalle by the same score on Thursday.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Falcons play at No. 2 Wayzata on Oct. 10.

Robbinsdale Cooper Girls Tennis

The 12th-seeded Robbinsdale Cooper girls tennis team was eliminated from the Section 6AA Tournament on Thursday after a 6-0 loss to No. 6 Minneapolis Southwest. The last match was called on account of darkness. 

Cooper had defeated No. 11 Minneapolis Washburn 4-3 on Wednesday in the sectional opener. Individual statistics were not made available.

Breck Girls Tennis

The second-seeded Breck girls tennis team advanced to the Section 4A Tournament final following a 7-0 defeat of St. Paul Humboldt on Wednesday and a 4-3 win over No. 3 St. Paul Academy on Thursday. 

The Mustangs play No. 1 seed Blake at the Baseline Tennis Center on Oct. 11. Individual statistics were not made available.

Hopkins Girls Soccer

Host Wayzata ended the Hopkins girls soccer team's hopes of finishing the regular season with a .500 record after the Trojans topped the Royals, 1-0, in Plymouth.

Hopkins ended the regular season with a 4-6-6 overall record and a 1-3-4 mark in the Lake Conference. 

Jillaine DeYoung was the Royals' leading goal-scorer in the regular season with four tallies to her name, while Abby Nyquist was the team's top point-earner with six on three goals and three assists.

Sectional matchups had not yet been announced as of Friday morning, with the tournament scheduled to be played Oct. 13-18.

Hopkins Boys Soccer

A 5-0 loss at Wayzata dropped the Hopkins boys soccer team to 4-9-3 overall and 1-5-2 in the final Lake standings as the Royals now await to find out their seed and first-round opponent for the Section 6AA Tournament.

Sectional matchups had not yet been announced as of Friday morning, with the tournament scheduled to be played Oct. 13-18.

Updated individual statistics from the 2011 regular season were not made available.

Robbinsdale Armstrong Girls Soccer

The Armstrong girls soccer team lost 1-0 at Anoka on Thursday to drop to 1-10-3 overall and 1-7-2 in the Northwest Suburban Conference.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Falcons close out the regular season on Saturday at Buffalo.

A 1-0 loss at Anoka dropped the Armstrong boys soccer team to 4-9-3 overall and 3-5-2 in the conference.

Robbinsdale Cooper Girls Soccer

The Cooper girls soccer team topped Fridley, 4-0, on Thursday to improve to 4-10-1 overall and 3-7-0 in the North Suburban Conference.

Meg Gaytko and Haley Sundquist lead the Hawks with four goals apiece as the team prepares to play Osseo in its regular-season finale on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Robbinsdale Cooper Boys Soccer

The Cooper boys soccer team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 loss at Fridley to drop to 2-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

Simeon Ogunyemi leads the Hawks with six goals as the team prepares for the Section 6AA Tournament that begins on Oct. 13.

Breck Girls Soccer

A 2-1 loss to St. Croix Lutheran dropped the Breck girls soccer team to 4-10 overall and 3-7 in the final Tri-Metro Conference standings.

Individual statistics were not made available. The Mustangs are awaiting their seeding and first-round matchup for the Section 6A Tournament that is scheduled to begin on Oct. 10.

Breck Boys Soccer

The Breck boys soccer team tied St. Croix Lutheran in its regular-season finale to take an overall record of 6-8-2 and conference mark of 6-2-2 into the playoffs.

Andrew Headrick led the team with 10 goals and nine assists in the regular season. The Mustangs are awaiting their seeding and first-round matchup for the Section 6A Tournament that is scheduled to begin on Oct. 10.
