Sports Roundup: Hopkins Girls Cagers Clinch Share Of Lake Conference Title

Hopkins sweeps, Cooper splits, Breck drops two in local basketball matchups on Tuesday night.

It was nothing but hoops for the three Golden Valley high schools Tuesday as basketball squads from Robbinsdale Cooper, Hopkins and Breck were all in action.

Hopkins Girls Basketball: Royals 69, Wayzata 43

The Hopkins girls basketball team put itself into position to win the Lake Conference with a 69-43 home win over Wayzata.

Brianna Williams scored a game-high 17 points for the Royals, with Sydney Coffey and Mikaala Shackelford chipping in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The victory improved Hopkins to 24-1 overall and 6-1 in the Lake, with one game remaining in the regular season: at Minnetonka on Thursday at 7 p.m.

A win over the Skippers would give the Royals the conference title by one game over Eden Prairie, which has already completed its circuit schedule with a 6-2 mark.

Cooper Girls Basketball: Hawks 75, Columbia Heights 35

The Robbinsdale Cooper girls basketball team kept itself alive for a share of the North Suburban Conference championship with a 75-35 home win versus Columbia Heights.

Fourteen Hawks players scored in all, with Kwanisha Patterson leading the way with 11 points in the victory that improved Cooper's overall record to 16-9.

Now 14-1 in conference play with one game remaining, the Hawks will have their chance to forge a tie atop the final North Suburban standings when they travel to Benilde-St. Margaret's on Friday night for a 7:15 p.m. start.

The Red Knights are 15-0 in conference play this season, including a 61-27 defeat of Cooper on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

Hopkins Boys Basketball: Royals 87, Wayzata 57

An 87-57 win at Wayzata kept the Hopkins boys basketball team tied with Eden Prairie atop the Lake Conference with a circuit record of 5-1 and an overall mark of 23-1.

Marvin Singleton led the Royals with 26 points, with Zach Stahl scoring 14 points, Joe Coleman 12 points and Siyani Chambers 11 points.

Hopkins hosts Minnetonka on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Cooper Boys Basketball: Columbia Heights 78, Hawks 72

The Robbinsdale Cooper boys basketball team dropped to 15-8 overall and 9-5 in the North Suburban with a 78-72 loss at Columbia Heights.

Terrance Averyheart led all scorers with 24 points, while Hawks teammates Handful Pour and Raheem Tyner scored 22 and 17 points, respectively.

Coopers hosts Benilde-St. Margaret's on Tuesday night.

Breck Boys Basketball: Minneapolis Roosevelt 65, Breck 59

The Breck boys basketball team lost, 65-59, to visiting Minneapolis Roosevelt to fall to 10-13 overall this season.

Joseph Yared led the Mustangs with 20 points, while Jeffrey Lurie scored 16 points in the loss.

Breck, 6-8 in the Tri-Metero Conference, travels to circuit rival Minnehaha Academy on Thursday for a 7 p.m. start.

Breck Girls Basketball: Minneapolis Roosevelt 61, Breck 49

A 61-49 non-conference loss to visiting Minneapolis Roosevelt dropped the Breck girls basketball team to 8-12 on the season.

The Mustangs' Katie Dickinson led all scorers with 24 points, while teammate Nina Killingstad tallied 11 points in the loss.

Breck hosts Tri-Metro rival Minnehaha Academy at 5 p.m. Friday night in an attempt to improve on its 5-9 conference record.
