Sports Roundup: Breck Advances in Girls Hockey Sectional

Mustangs top Mound-Westonka 6-2 in semifinals, will play Blake for Section 5A title; Cooper hoopers sweep Spring Lake Park.

The defending Section 5A champion Breck girls hockey team will play for a return trip to state after winning its semifinal matchup on Tuesday night as the Robbinsdale Cooper girls and boys basketball teams swept Spring Lake Park in North Suburban Conference play.

Breck Girls Hockey: Mustangs 6, Mound-Westonka 2

The second-seeded Breck girls hockey team defeated No. 3 seed Mound-Westonka 6-2in the 5A semifinals at Parade Ice Garden to set up a sectional title game matchup against Blake.

The Whitehawks led 2-1 after one period of play before the Mustangs exploded for three goals in the middle frame and two more in the final stanza en route to the victory.

Milica McMillen and Kayla Mork each scored twice, with Prentice Basten and Karina Marette each adding a goal as Taylor Niesen made 22 saves on the night.

Breck will take on the top-seeded Bears, a Tri-Metro Conference rival, for the sectional championship at Parade at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

Robbinsdale Cooper Boys Basketball: Hawks 76, Spring Lake Park 45

A 76-45 defeat of Spring Lake Park put the Robbinsdale Cooper boys basketball team in a three-way tie in the North Suburban standings with a 9-3 circuit record and a 15-6 overall record.

The Hawks led from the start, with Handful Pour logging a game-high 18 points, with Terrance Averyheart and Rashad Vaughn scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Cooper travels to fellow conference No. 2 St. Louis Park for a 7:15 p.m. start on Friday night.

Robbinsdale Cooper Girls Basketball: Hawks 71, Spring Lake Park 69

The Robbinsdale Cooper girls basketball team eked out a 71-69 win at Spring Lake Park to improve to 14-9 overall and 12-1 in the North Suburban.

The Hawks, currently one game behind first-place Benilde-St. Margaret's in the North Suburban race, got a game-high 24 points from Talalyiah Howard-Rich, 17 points from Chelsey McGee and 10 points from Caitlin Stifter-Hennen in the win.

Cooper hosts St. Louis Park at 7:15 p.m. Friday night.

Hopkins Boys Basketball: Royals 84, Maple Grove 51

An 84-51 non-conference win at Maple Grove improved the Hopkins boys basketball team's record to 20-1 overall as the Royals prepare for a Lake Conference showdown with Eden Prairie later this week.

Hopkins had no troubles with the Crimson, taking a 54-31 halftime lead before cruising to victory behind a contest-best 19 points form Marvin Singleton, 18 points form Joe Coleman and 16 points form Nicholas Jorgensen.

Robbinsdale Armstrong Girls Basketball: Falcons 64, Champlin Park 61

The Robbinsdale Armstrong girls basketball team entered its final three-game stretch of the regular season in thrilling manner with a 64-61 overtime victory at Northwest Suburban Conference rival Champlin Park.

After leading, 33-23, at the half, the Falcons nearly succumbed to a Rebels rally in the second half that forced an overtime session won by the visitors, 13-10.

Armstrong was led by Ally Gove's 21 points, as Kassie Kaluzniak and Kari Fossum each scored 10 points in the win.

The Falcons travel to Centennial for a 7 p.m. start this Friday, before closing out their pre-playoff schedule at Coon Rapids on Friday, Feb. 25.

Breck Boys Hockey: Mustangs 4, St. Paul Academy 1

A 4-1 win over St. Paul Academy at Drake Arena staked the Breck boys hockey team to a 16-8 overall record — 12-1 in the Tri-Metro.

Grant Opperman scored twice for the Mustangs, with Max Oppenheimer chipping in a goal as Jack Kenney made 21 saves for the win in goal.

Breck hosts Tri-Metro leader Blake (13-0 in conference play) on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Robbinsdale Armstrong Boys Hockey: Centennial 3, Falcons 1

The Robbinsdale Armstrong boys hockey team fell to 12-11 overall and 8-10 in the Northwest Suburban with a 3-1 loss at Centennial.

Michael Greenberg made 29 saves for the Falcons in the loss, with Kristian Evans scoring the squad's lone goal of the game.

Armstrong hosts Blaine at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Robbinsdale Armstrong Boys Basketball: Champlin Park 80, Falcons 71

The Robbinsdale Armstrong boys basketball team could not dig its way out of a 44-23 halftime deficit in losing, 80-71, to visiting Champlin Park.

Marquel Curtis led all scorers with 24 points, while Falcons teammate Tyler Boland and Anthony Hill recorded 14 and 13 points, respectively. TJ Okafor and Teddy Gibson logged 12 points each in the loss.

Armstrong, now 15-7 overall and 10-6 in the Northwest Suburban, hosts Centennial at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Breck Basketball: Mustangs Swept By DeLaSalle

The Breck girls and boys basketball teams were swept, 64-24 and 84-37, respectively, by DeLaSalle in Tri-Metro matchups.

The Breck boys host Blake at 7 p.m. Friday, the same time the Mustang girls travel to Hopkins to take on the Bears.
