(PHOTOS) Robbinsdale Cooper Opens Season with Tough Loss to De La Salle

Hawks cut an 18-point second-half deficit to two but De La Salle held off the rally at the free throw stripe.

opened their 2011-2012 boys' basketball season with a showcase matchup against No.2 ranked Class AAA De La Salle on Saturday. The two teams met as part of the 10th Annual Breakdown Tip Off Classic which featured 26 top teams from across the state in an all-day affair at Minnetonka High School.

Sophomore forward Rashad Vaughn put on a show for college recruiters, including University of Minnesota coach Tubby Smith, leading the Hawks with 30 points. Senior Eric Brown added 16 points to help Robbinsdale Cooper keep pace with favored DeLaSalle. In the end, though, the Hawks came up just short losing 64-61 to go 01 on the young season.

The Hawks got off to a fast start behind nine quick points by Vaughn to build a 17-10 lead, but a 28-0 DeLaSalle run bracketing the half helped the Islanders build up an 18-point lead that was too much for Cooper to overcome despite closing the gap to two with three minutes to play.
