Local Squads Gearing Up For Postseason

Several Golden Valley-area athletic teams are either already competing in, or preparing for, sectional tournaments.

The spring sports season is crossing from the regular season to the postseason in earnest this week, with several local teams either preparing for, or already competing in, the sectional playoffs. 

Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys Lacrosse: Red Knights 11, Holy Angels 3

An 11-3 defeat of visiting non-conference rival Holy Angels on Friday night gave the defending state champion Benilde-St. Margaret's boys lacrosse team a spotless 13-0 record as it now prepares for the postseason.

Will Hoesley capped the regular season with a team-high 44 goals, with Christian Horn scoring 26 goals and Taylor Topousis adding 22 goals this spring.

BSM holds the No. 1 seed in Section 5 and earned a first-round bye. The Red Knights will host either No. 8 East Ridge or No. 9 Minneapolis on Friday at 7 p.m.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Girls Lacrosse: Cretin-Derham Hall 12, Red Knights 8

Cretin-Derham Hall defeated the Benilde-St. Margaret's girls lacrosse team 12-8 in the regular-season finale on Friday night. 

Maddy Moore led the Red Knights with 18 pre-playoff goals, with Sara Taffe and Paige Lawlor netting 16 and 15 goals, respectively.

BSM enters the playoffs with a 6-7-1 record and claimed a No. 9 seed for the Section 5 playoffs. The Red Knights are scheduled to play eighth-seeded South Washington County at Woodbury High School on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Baseball: Totino-Grace 12, Red Knights 1

The Benilde-St. Margaret's baseball team fell one game off the lead in the North Suburban Conference after losing 12-1 at home to Totino-Grace in a battle of then-circuit leaders on Friday night. 

Robby Sutherland knocked in Jimmy Heck with BSM's lone run of the contest in the fourth inning.

By that point, the Eagles had already put eight runs on the board after a seven-run explosion in the top half of the fourth. After scoring four more times in the fifth inning, Totino-Grace closed out their hosts to end the game via the 10-run rule.

The Red Knights, 13-5 overall and 11-3 in the North Suburban, play Holy Angels at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday night at Donaldson Park in Richfield.

Robbinsdale Cooper Baseball: Hawks 11, Irondale 1

The Robbinsdale Cooper baseball team needed just five innings to defeat Irondale, 11-1, in a North Suburban matchup on Friday to improve to 15-2 overall and hold onto a share of first place in the conference with a 12-2 mark.

Individual statistics were not available. Cooper plays at Mahtomedi on Tuesday at 4:14 p.m.

Breck Boys Lacrosse: Mustangs Claim No. 4 Seed In Section 5

The Breck boys lacrosse team earned a No. 4 seed and a first-round bye for the Section 5 playoffs after finishing the regular season with a 4-9 record.

After sitting out the first round, the Mustangs will host either No. 5 Holy Angels or No. 12 Bloomington Kennedy on Friday at 7 p.m.

Steven Kiesel leads Breck with 59 points this season, while Jack O'Connor has 24 points heading into the playoffs.

Breck Girls Lacrosse: Mustangs Close 3-9-1 Regular Season

A 14-8 loss to Holy Angels on Friday closed out the Breck girls lacrosse team's regular season with a 3-9-1 record.

The Mustangs were handed a No. 12 seed for the Section 5 playoffs and will play at No. 5 seed Roseville on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the postseason opener.

Carly Schaeder leads Breck with 31 goals this spring, with both Leah Schwartzman and Madeleine Holker tallying 10 goals apiece in the regular season.

Breck Baseball: St. Paul Academy 9, Mustangs 7

A 9-7 home loss to Tri-Metro Conference rival St. Paul Academy dropped the Breck baseball team to 5-7 overall and 5-4 in the circuit.

Individual statistics were not available. The Mustangs play at North St. Paul at 7 p.m. Monday night.
