Local Schools Compete in Nordic Ski Section 6 Championships

It was a busy and successful day for Cooper, Armstrong, Hopkins and Breck high school skiers on Monday.

Both Hopkins boys’ and girls’ Nordic ski teams claimed Section 6 championships at Theodore Wirth Park.

Boys Teams

Robbinsdale Armstrong High School boys finished fourth, Breck School finished ninth and Robbinsdale Cooper High School finished tenth.

Hopkins senior Harris Dirnberger finished first overall, with a total time of 29:44.6. Teammate, senior Jakob Ellingson, took second with a time of 29:50.8. Senior Bjorn Leach rounded out the list of Hopkins skiers in the top 10 with a ninth place, 32:41.0 finish.

Armstrong junior Jon Delaney finished sixth with a time of 31:35.6 and teammate Tom Norman finished 11th with a time of 33:07.8.

The Hopkins boys’ team scored a total of 378 points in the race, beating second-place Minneapolis Southwest by a comfortable 25-point margin.

Girls Teams

The Hopkins girls’ team had a tighter two-point margin—scoring 375 points to Robbinsdale Armstrong High School's 373 points. Cooper skiers finished fourth place and Breck took ninth place.

Hopkins senior Sarah Benton finished first with an overall time of 35:04.8. Armstrong freshman Hannah Rudd took second with a time of 35:21.0.Hopkins sophomore Siena Ellingson finished third at 36:05.4. Cooper Senior Ellie Evans finished sixth at 36:54.0.

Freshman Claire Benton was just outside the top 10 with an 11th-place, 38:36.0 finish.

The wins qualify both Hopkins teams for the state tournament taking place Feb. 14 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
