Fall Sports Season Begins For Local Squads

Several autumn squads from Robbinsdale, Breck and Hopkins have commenced their campaigns.

The fall sports season has descended upon the area as several autumn squads from local high schools have begun their seasons over the past week.

Cooper Boys Soccer

The boys soccer team dropped its first two games of the year, losing 6-2 to Heritage Christian last Thursday and 9-2 at St. Michael-Albertville on Monday.

Bashiru Kormah leads the Hawks with two goals thus far, with Simeon Ogunyemi and Joseph Lewis logging one tally apiece.

Cooper travels to the third-ranked team in Class A, Benilde-St. Margaret’s for a 7 p.m. game today.

Cooper Volleyball

The Robbinsdale Cooper volleyball team opened its fall slate in good stead with a three-game sweep (25-8, 25-18, 25-19) at Minneapolis Edison on Tuesday.

Individual statistics were not available. The Hawks host St. Paul Como Park at 7 p.m. today.

Cooper Girls Soccer

With a tie and a loss in its first two games, the Cooper girls soccer team is still in search of its first victory.

The Hawks tied Heritage Christian Academy, 1-1, last Thursday, then lost 8-0 to Minneapolis Washburn on Monday.

Individual statistics were not available. Cooper travels to the top-ranked team in Class A, Benilde-St. Margaret’s for a 5 p.m. game today.

Armstrong Volleyball

Opening with a split of its first two matches this season, the volleyball team made up for a season-starting loss to Totino-Grace (25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 12-25) last Thursday by defeating visiting Benilde-St. Margaret’s (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) on Monday.

Individual statistics were not available. The Falcons host No. 2-ranked Bloomington Jefferson at 7 p.m. today.

Armstrong Boys Soccer

The Armstrong boys soccer team opened the season without a goal in losing its first two games at Bloomington Jefferson (6-0) and Centennial (5-0) last Thursday and Tuesday, respectively.

The Falcons remain on the road for a 4 p.m. game today at Hibbing and a 4:30 p.m. game Friday at Duluth Marshall.

Armstrong Girls Soccer

Back-to-back losses to ranked teams have left the Armstrong girls soccer team winless through the first week of the year.

The Falcons fell 2-1 at No. 9 Edina last Saturday, then 2-0 at No. 5 Centennial on Tuesday.

Individual statistics were not available. The Falcons play their first home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday versus Champlin Park.

Breck Boys Soccer

The boys soccer team is still in search of a win after losing its first three games of the season.

Trinity School topped the Mustangs 6-1 last Thursday, with third-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s shutting out their visitors by a 5-0 score on Saturday and DeLaSalle defeating Breck 4-1 in the Tri-Metro Conference opener on Tuesday.

Andrew Headrick tops the team with two assists, with Erik Horstman and Andrew Stuempfig accounting for the Mustangs’ two goals.

Breck plays at Mounds Park Academy at 4:30 p.m. today.

Breck Girls Soccer

The Breck girls soccer team has yet to score in 2011 following a pair of shutout losses to open the year.

Top-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s blanked the Mustangs, 8-0, last Saturday, then lost the Tri-Metro Conference opener by a 1-0 score to DeLaSalle on Tuesday.

Breck hosts Mounds Park Academy at 7:30 p.m. today.

Breck Volleyball

The Breck volleyball team lost its season opener to Park Center, 19-25, 24-26, 24-26, on Tuesday.

Individual statistics were not available. The Mustangs play at Brooklyn Center at 7:30 p.m. today.

Hopkins Girls Tennis

So far the busiest of Hopkins' fall teams, the girls tennis squad is 4-1 in dual matches this season and also finished second at the New Prague Invite last Saturday.

At New Prague, Ida Ramic and Alex Johnson as well as the doubles teams of Shelby Benkofske/Rachel Sadowsky and Tess Stender/Margaret McDonnell all finished second; Mia Rafowitz and the duo of Natalie Ferris/Abby Isaacson took third, with Sally Guthrie claiming a consolation title.

In dual matches, Hopkins has topped St. Paul Harding (6-1), Totino-Grace (7-0), Roseville (5-2) and St. Louis Park (6-1), while losing to Visitation (4-3).

The Royals hosted Benilde-St. Margaret's on Wednesday. The results were not immediately available.

Hopkins Girls Soccer

With two wins in its first three tries, the Hopkins girls soccer team is off to a 2-1 start.

The Royals shutout Chaska (4-0) and Champlin Park (2-0) last Thursday and Friday, respectively, before losing for the first time in a 4-1 setback to eighth-ranked Burnsville.

Jillaine DeYoung scored twice over Hopkins' first two wins, with Paris Ebersviller, Leah Chase, Cody Webster and Corbin Boyd also logging a tally last week. Statistics for the Burnsville game were not available.

The Royals play at ninth-ranked Edina at 5 p.m. Tuesday. 

Hopkins Boys Soccer

After winning its first game of the year, 1-0 over Chaska last Thursday, the Hopkins boys soccer team was defeated in two-straight contests.

The Royals were downed without a goal against Osseo (2-0) last Friday and 2-0 at Burnsville on Tuesday.

Individual statistics were not available. Hopkins plays at No. 8 Edina at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Hopkins Volleyball

The Hopkins volleyball team, ranked ninth in Class AAA, split its first two games to open the season at 1-1.

Following a 3-0 win at New Prague (25-20, 25-10, 25-23) last Friday, the Royals lost 3-1 to sixth-ranked Centennial (25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 16-25) on Tuesday at home.

Individual statistics were not available. Hopkins hosts Orono at 7 p.m. today.
