Breck's Kiesel Finishes High School Career At All-Star Game

The Mustangs wide receiver is using the Minnesota State All-Star Football Game as a stepping stone to his college career

Breck wide receiver Steven Kiesel had a surprising breakthrough while spending the past week at the Minnesota State All-Star Game’s training camp in St. Peter.

No matter the size of the school, football is still football, and talented players can play at any level.

“My roommate (Mahnomen linebacker Alex LaVoy) had a graduating class of 36,” Kiesel said. “Then there’s the Wayzatas and Minnetonkas. It’s just great getting to know these people.”

Kiesel got plenty of time to acquaint himself with the state’s best while preparing himself for collegiate football during this week’s training camp at Gustavus Adolphus, which leads into Saturday’s 38th Annual All-Star Game.

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium, and for the first time in 31 years the format is North versus South squads instead of Metro versus Outstate.

This is the final stop for Kiesel representing Breck. The wide receiver plans to play football and lacrosse next year at Williams College, and he said his time at the All-Star Game allowed him to take the next step toward the college game.

“It’s been fun,” he said. “These are the best players I’ve ever played with, and they’re from all different levels.”

The Mustangs finished last season with an 8-3 record and fell to Holy Family Catholic in the Section 5AAA championship game. Kiesel said the closeness of the Breck community is what he’ll miss most when he moves on.

“It’s such a small community,” he said. “It’s nice to know everybody and have personal relationships with all the people on the team and in the school.”

Now, Kiesel is using this weekend’s All-Star Game to transition from that Breck community into his collegiate career.

“This is a good level of competition,” Kiesel said. “It’s a step up from my high school team. It’s just getting to the next level and knowing that I can compete.”
