Both Hopkins and Robbinsdale Armstrong defeated their opponents in Saturday’s Breakdown Sports USA Boys’ Tip Off Classic.
The Tip Off Classic featured 15 boys’ games. Twenty-three of the 30 teams are ranked in Breakdown Sports’ top 15 preseason rankings, including the No. 1 team in two of the four classes.
Robbinsdale Armstrong blew past Roseville. The Falcons got up to an early lead, closing the half 43-32. Roseville attempted a comeback in the second, but couldn’t quite close the gap. Robbinsdale Armstrong finished with an 83-71 win.
Senior forward Ryan Caspreson led the game with 21 points. Junior forward Evan Nolan scored 20 points. Junior guard Jerome Dixon had 14. And junior forward Sean Burns sank 13.
Hopkins held off Lakeville North in an 89-84 nail-biter. The game started out close, with the Royals closing out the half up 46-42. In the second, Hopkins pulled ahead 60-49 at one point, but Lakeville North rallied to shrink the gap to 64-63.
The rest of the half saw back-and-forth action, but Hopkins came on strong in the final minutes to secure a five-point victory.
Senior forward Stephon Sharp led the game with 25 points. Sophomore forward Amir Coffey sank 20 points. Senior guard Jake Wright scored 15 points. Junior guard John Warren got 11.
