Recognition, giving mark 2013 Rotary Awards

The Rotary Club of Golden Valley presented nearly $15,000 in scholarships, recognized $4,500 in contributions to local non-profit organizations, and honored two community members at it's year-end awards ceremony June 18.

"The end of the Rotary year in Golden Valley is always marked by special people, special recognition and a celebration of community," said David Hutchinson, 2012-13 club president.

Margaret Wong, an educator at Breck School, was recognized as Citizen of the Year for her work with youth exchange programs and Adrienne Thomle, an 11-year Golden Valley Rotarian, was recognized as Rotarian of the Year for her service with local charitable organizations.

The club also awarded six student academic scholarships valued at a total of $8,000. The club expanded its scholarship program by partnering with local businesses and community members who sponsored scholarships.

The Dick Rudeen Teacher Fund $2,000 scholarship will be presented on June 25 to Becky Fritz, a teacher at Hopkins North Junior High. The award is dedicated to teachers pursuing continuing education.  It is named for former Rotarian Dick Rudeen.

Ten scholarships valued at a total of $4,900 were presented to Robbinsdale Armstrong High School 'A' School alternative program students who participated in Rotary's STRIVE program at an awards ceremony on May 21. STRIVE is an acronym for "Students Taking a Renewed Interest in the Value of Education."

The club's contributions committee selects local charitable organizations to support and works with the two high schools to select students for scholarships. The annual awards ceremony is organized by the past presidents of Golden Valley Rotary who are responsible for selecting candidates for the two awards. The meeting also marks the passing of the gavel from last year's president David Hutchinson to this year's president Betsy Anderson.
