The path to becoming a journalist isn't always an easy one. But for young student writers at Robbinsdale Cooper High School, the future is looking bright.

During their Dec. 3 school board meeting, ISD 281 school board members applauded writers from the Cooper Quill Newspaper for recent accomplishments including a Distinguished International Honor Award from the Quill and Scroll Society, a Second Class Honor Rating from the National Scholastic Press Association and a Silver Medal Award from the Minnesota High School Press Association.

Eric Zuccola has been the Quill advisor for the last 14 years and said that his talented students keep him going.

"We’ve been very fortunate to have students start as early as their freshman year and maintain a connection with the paper all four years," Zuccola said. "Although they are very busy students, they are dependable and hit deadlines."

Dami Gilbert, Lauren Bolser, Ashlyn Crawford and Mariah Lilja attended the school board meeting to receive recognition. Alex Van Abbema and Andy Peterson both won state honorable mention awards, though they weren't in attendance.
